Promotion

Queen, Bishop, Rook, Knight on the 9th rank

Note

This is a re-submission of a declined NCV. The new promotion rank is being submitted as "9th," even though in practicality this comes out as promoting on the 7th rank (immediately past the walls). I don't know why the board is setting the first rank to "3," but it is, so I had to compensate. I also made sure to include that the home rank needs to be set to 1, for the reason mentioned below. In addition to changing the promotion rank, the main change made is that I added two extra squares on each side of the walls. This allows for more mobility, while still keeping that "bottlenecked" feel. There are two main advantages to the added squares: 1) pawns can now maneuver and capture on the edges of the board, and 2) bishops can now get to the other side of the bottleneck by going through the edges of the board, not just through the center.

Status: Declined

Reason: Unfortunately, the main issues of the position have not been fixed:
1. It is trivial to close a position and such limit the variety of game plans to an extent of a minimum.
2. The newly added squares and the 9th promotion rank only encourage players to close the position and discourage active play.
3. Many drawn endgames are still drawn even when playing on points, due to the fact that you can get points when you promote, i.e. you captured a promoted rook and no longer lose points, as you get +5 points but not +1.

I'm confused; what's wrong with drawn endgames? Isn't that normal for chess?

For chess I'm sure I wouldn't be able to beat a GM or an engine, or even a 2000-rated player, but here I could draw with either of the above without much trouble.

What kind of draws are you getting? Stalemates? Insufficient material? Repetition? And how many times did you guys replicate the issue?

Repetition / 50 move rule of course, the games are too closed for there to be any progress.

Gotcha. I guess bottleneck is a concept that won’t ever become an NCV. I can’t think of any way to change it more than I have.
