Hello all. I have been playing variants for awhile but this is my first submission, and it uses a concept that does not exist in any other variant - two teams of a player and computer, with the two computers (futers) playing against each other and both players use their pieces to influence the game in their favor. Game name: Tag Team Game description: Use your knights to help your teammate win! The rules: 4 player, teams, blue and green are futers who have their standard starting position (castling permitted), white and black are players who are allied to blue and green respectively. They each have six knights that they can use to influence the game between the futers as well as a royal wazir that can be used to pass moves. Play alternates White -> Blue (W's ally) -> Black -> Green and the game is over when either blue or green get checkmated or white or black gets stalemated (where the stalemated player loses). Due to symmetry and the similarities to normal chess (and the low skill level of the AI teammates), this game is unlikely to favor either player. The starting position: I have 15 testing games played against eight unique opponents over three days (most recent first): // latest version // this game uses an older version of the variant Some general musings that I've gathered from testing: Futers can spot simple tactics but are generally very weak. This creates some element of luck, though it is controlled luck since futers' behavior can be manipulated to some extent. Since the player moves before the ally futer, there are tactics in which a player can make a move that their ally can immediately capitalize on before the other team can react. The futer is usually ok at figuring out these tactics so players have some measure of control over what the futer does. The fifth game in the above list is an illustration with the move 17.Ne6! Players' knights can get stuck on the edge and not be permitted to develop. Moving the wazir is an option to pass one's move in such a situation (or in any situation). Losing all of one's knights is dangerous since if the opponent can get a knight to a1/h8 they win by stalemate. This alternate win condition makes the game more nuanced since there is an incentive to maintain more knights than the other human player but can be a high-risk high-reward strategy. The fourth game in the list featured a stalemate win. I hope you enjoy! ~ coolthing

Wow! Looks amazing, I would maybe rather submit as WoF, excelent job tho!

Status: Accepted

Reason: Nice work on the variant! Quite a good amount of correct design choices allows for much more advanced zombie manipulation as well as for complex tactics implying unwinding is more than a good strategy and sometimes it is good to give up space to get it back a few moves later. Overall, the only thing that does not fit is the time control, so we're proposing to change it to 2|7 as to allow players to calculate more advanced zombie manipulation.

Fair points, thanks to both of you!

you know its gonna be good when a titled player posts a NCV

Well, this is technically not true. Comfuters do not select their moves randomly, and it is possible to learn how to manipulate them to your advantage, especially since your partner bot moves right after you do (great design choice btw). While the number of people who are good at futer manipulation is low (and tbh most of them are on our testing team lol), I don't see this as a reason to make it a WoF. Besides, the position is far more complex than most WoFs, and games will last longer than in most WoFs.

That said, it's up to the author whether they want it as NCV or WoF. Either way, cool position!

+1 Very good gameplay. Can't wait for the CGA's to add it

Exactly as Box said, one can manipulate the futers even in a game with this much pieces if you have a time control slow enough to calculate their heuristics in mind, so I believe the testing for this will be quite extensive. Either way, an interesting concept.

i think NCV would be better

Speaking of heuristics, my current strategy will be to use only one knight on the board at a time, unless moving another onto the board would defend a piece that is being attacked or my current knight is also defending or has nowhere to move without being attacked. This would be to attempt to limit the knights I have available on the board able to be taken and to not take squares away from my ally for development. I predict later into the game it may be more available to defend your ally from checkmate with the knights on the lowest rank and I will start my attack with the knights on the side.

I like it, knights are always fun. I have two similar concepts, one being with half of the pieces (left and right sides) being on different teams and one with the pawns being a patzer.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! I originally wanted this as an NCV because it's possible to somewhat manipulate the futers and this is in fact how many tactical opportunities are created. Of course, because the futers are rather weak (and in particular they don't see how the opposing team's two-move combinations can be used against them) it is possible for the futer to haphazardly throw the game.

Now available at  https://www.chess.com/variants/tag-team

Unfortunately, team games with zombies are not yet fully supported, so it will be casual for a while.
