Need a new rig. Suggestions?

I'm looking to build a new PC. Just want to swap out the motherboard and processor. What do you guys suggest for a beast to grind on chess positions? I'm thinking bang-for-buck. I dont' want to empty my bank account. 6-core AMD? 4-core Intel? 6-core Intel (seem expensive). THoughts?

PrawnEatsPrawn

Dude, lets talk.

1. Hexa core AMD < Intel quad core.

2. Hexa core Intel (i7 970....980x....990x) socket 1366 is the flagship build at the moment.

However, Intel is on the verge of releasing a new socket (LGA 2011... due Q1 2012), so hold your fire.

The Intel quad-cores do seem to be doing better than the 6-core AMDs right now, but I didn't know which was better for grinding on chess. I didn't know if the extra 2 cores would give more kN/s than the fast 4-core Intels.

You seem to be veering towards AMD, in which case you should consider a Bulldozer build.

p.s. Intel Hexa-core in action:

Depth 33 in four and a half hours (complicated position).

i don't mean to veer towards AMD. i'm not like some guys here in the USA who "will only ever drive a Ford". i am just wondering what's best for a chess-grinding box. do the 2 extra cores matter in the case of the AMD 6-cores vs the i7 Intel 4-cores?

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

which will give the highest kN/s?

Hexa-core Intel..... see my edit above.

However, I think you should wait.... Intel LGA 2011 and second generation Intel i7 Hexa-core processors both in the pipeline.

Bad time to buy, wait six months.

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

it feels like a bad time to buy right now, with christmas coming up and new processors in the works. and can i say HOLY COW that is a lot of kN/s!!! impressive, prawn. WOW.

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

thanks for the help by the way. :-)

Do you see that with the White pieces, I am only holding my own.

I'm up against a shop-bought i7 990x rig.

Obviously, a twin processor Intel Xeon build would be even better but prices are prohibitive (around 5K$ U.S. just for two top-notch processors).

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

i would be curious to see the PGNs of some of your games against other monster-boxes some time.

if you ever want to contribute to the power chess project, your machine *obviously* meets the requirements.

I checked rating of top rated engine here computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/rating_list_all.html and it is 3335. There is no info about the testing hardware. Can anyone tell me the approx elo of the engine on these processor with 4 gb DDR3 RAM - 1. intel dual core e2200 2. intel core i5 2410m 3. intel core i7 2630qm 4. intel core i5 2500k 5. intel core i7 2600k And will I be able to run that 4CPU engine on core i5 2410m with 2 cores and 4 thread ?

I could have answered some general questions but your questions are too specific.

I would have to do your research, to answer those questions.

Tell me what your broad aims are and I'll offer some advice.

what was ur pc config when ur engine searched 35 depth in 2 hour and speed was 19000 knps.?

Here is the config I am thinking to build- 8 GB CORSAIR 1600 Mhz RAM 1 TB HDD 60 GB CORSAIR FORCE SSD PSU- Cooler master 700 watt FAN- Cooler master 212+ I am confused in these - CPU - i5 2500k or i7 2600k MOBO - ASUS P8P67 M or ASUSP8Z68M PRO GPU- GTX 560Ti or HD 6870 1. I want a good cpu to calcualte more KnPs in chess. I think 2500k is gonna be enough. It can calculate 10000knps and 2600k can 14000 knps. Does more KnPs really help too much to beat other systems with same engine? I know 2500k is more than enough for gaming. But what about chess calculation? I dont think more KnPs decides the result of a chess match played between two computers. Need experts advice, does 2600k really worth the extra 100$? 2. Which mobo p67 or z68. I want to overclock my cpu upto 4.7 Ghz. which one is good for cpu oc? And I am gonna put one of above GPU, 8 Gb RAM, And do they support GPU OC and SLI mode? 3. Which is better value for money. I know 560 is better but its costly too. Is there any major diffence while playing DIRT 3, CRYSIS,BATTLEFIELD 3 etc on high/max settings on 1280 x 1024 reso? Waiting for the replies. I hope I can get detailed info/suggestion on my question.

Yes, search depth is paramount. Slower engines come to complete standstill (in real, practical time) at lower depths.

does 2600k really worth the extra 100$?

 Do the arithmetic: (Kn/s)/$

Which mobo p67 or z68?

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/299968-12-price-issue

And do they support GPU OC and SLI mode?

All good boards support SLI. GPU OC is easily accomplished with a software solution:

http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

(Free and easy to use).

I can't tell you too much about graphics cards because I went for overkill: Two NVIDIA GTX 460 (2GB) in SLI.

4GB of DDR5 VRAM is plenty for my needs. I'm not even a gamer, I only play Civilization V. Laughing

p.s. It would be better for those of us over forty, if you would kindly space out your posts in future. A solid block of text with tech details thrown in, is quite difficult on the eyes.

Actually I typed questions in different lines but after submit its being shown in a single line. I think we cant use enter key here. And thanx for the reply :-)
