Dude, lets talk.
1. Hexa core AMD < Intel quad core.
2. Hexa core Intel (i7 970....980x....990x) socket 1366 is the flagship build at the moment.
However, Intel is on the verge of releasing a new socket (LGA 2011... due Q1 2012), so hold your fire.

The Intel quad-cores do seem to be doing better than the 6-core AMDs right now, but I didn't know which was better for grinding on chess. I didn't know if the extra 2 cores would give more kN/s than the fast 4-core Intels.

You seem to be veering towards AMD, in which case you should consider a Bulldozer build.
p.s. Intel Hexa-core in action:
Depth 33 in four and a half hours (complicated position).

i don't mean to veer towards AMD. i'm not like some guys here in the USA who "will only ever drive a Ford". i am just wondering what's best for a chess-grinding box. do the 2 extra cores matter in the case of the AMD 6-cores vs the i7 Intel 4-cores?
which will give the highest kN/s?
Hexa-core Intel..... see my edit above.
However, I think you should wait.... Intel LGA 2011 and second generation Intel i7 Hexa-core processors both in the pipeline.
Bad time to buy, wait six months.
it feels like a bad time to buy right now, with christmas coming up and new processors in the works. and can i say HOLY COW that is a lot of kN/s!!! impressive, prawn. WOW.

Do you see that with the White pieces, I am only holding my own.
I'm up against a shop-bought i7 990x rig.
Obviously, a twin processor Intel Xeon build would be even better but prices are prohibitive (around 5K$ U.S. just for two top-notch processors).
i would be curious to see the PGNs of some of your games against other monster-boxes some time.
if you ever want to contribute to the power chess project, your machine *obviously* meets the requirements.
I could have answered some general questions but your questions are too specific.
I would have to do your research, to answer those questions.
Tell me what your broad aims are and I'll offer some advice.

Does more KnPs really help too much to beat other systems with same engine?
Yes, search depth is paramount. Slower engines come to complete standstill (in real, practical time) at lower depths.
does 2600k really worth the extra 100$?
Do the arithmetic: (Kn/s)/$
Which mobo p67 or z68?

And do they support GPU OC and SLI mode?
All good boards support SLI. GPU OC is easily accomplished with a software solution:

(Free and easy to use).
I can't tell you too much about graphics cards because I went for overkill: Two NVIDIA GTX 460 (2GB) in SLI.
4GB of DDR5 VRAM is plenty for my needs. I'm not even a gamer, I only play Civilization V.
p.s. It would be better for those of us over forty, if you would kindly space out your posts in future. A solid block of text with tech details thrown in, is quite difficult on the eyes.
Are you using a phone?
Phones don't work well with forums, on this site.
I'm looking to build a new PC. Just want to swap out the motherboard and processor. What do you guys suggest for a beast to grind on chess positions? I'm thinking bang-for-buck. I dont' want to empty my bank account. 6-core AMD? 4-core Intel? 6-core Intel (seem expensive). THoughts?
