That's a cool variant.
New Position Workshop / Testing Thread

Is anyone going to consider seeing #4232? I know most of my variants are duds, but this one is good.

Or do I just need to try to make a decent variant without fairy pieces?
This seems good, but I still feel like there's a bit of ehh in it -- can't put my finger on what it is, though.

Fair. It is rather disappointingly simple.

doesn't work and never works
that's what they said about crazyway lol
but yeah it'll need a revamp if its to be done properly
I mean crazyway is different because it 1. can be done really easily with fatal/barepiece and 2. it's not luck-based. Fog however, is extremely luck-based, and with something like petrified it just amplifies the "You don't know what you're doing" problem. I mean yeah, it is possible, but it's always going to be luck-based and therefore not really follow the standard as of August 2025.
Dude, it has bare and fatal.
Please re-read the comment and to who I was directing the comment to. In that comment I was responding to @2bhnst about giveaway+crazyhouse, not your variant...

Is this better?
Because of it's simplicity, it may have a forced result, and it's also really similar to other variants/drafts of variants.

A major flaw of this is that most of the pieces and board already come from Mini Forest, and would likely have same gameplay, just with crazyhouse and n-check. Increasing the board size would give you Enchanted Woodland, and decreasing the board size will result in it probably not working. My advice for making this concept (especially the layout) is to make it even more differentiable from all the other forest variants.
EW is 10x10 with spells, so I think a 12x12 or 14x14 would still work
in fact it might make it better because it gives more space for a larger variety of pieces

Scratch that, maybe making it like Inferno, where all squares are available but all pieces are colourblind, might work since crazyhouse is one, which may lead to some strategies involving placing pawns on the opposite colours to promote.
(just a thought lol)
I tried to remake it on a 12x12 board
https://www.chess.com/variants/custom/game/87007232/63/3 (without restricted crazyhouse)

Is this better or should I add anything else?

(casually ignores the comment above) (joke: idk tbh, ask TV)

Juxtaposition / Storming The Castle II
Blue's bishops are now a semi-royal rook and queen.
As a 3-time player, I think the gameplay is similar to Storming The Castle, but is still different because 1) smaller board, fewer pieces, and 2) imbalance of control between YG. Similar because it's still one team trying to make a breakthrough while the other team tries to defend.

Okay, @TimeVeteran I tried to remake it on a 12x12

I didn't see your past attempt, but I like the concept. The setup looks pretty balanced, but maybe you should remove torpedo. Also what's the difference between restricted and non-restricted crazyhouse?

there are too many weak pieces (and too many pieces in general) for the size of the board, and the mobility options are extremely limited. generally we discourage this kind of spiral-like gameplay for those reasons

It's fog of war too, so maybe I should shrink it, and add more openings in the rings. Does that sound better?

The main issue is that most of the pieces have too few legal moves, which doesnt sync well with fog and large boards. The piece choice needs to be revised. Additionally, shuffling is typically the best choice, since your opponent can't really attack into the roayl's "pocket"

Restricted Crazyhouse is when you can't place certain pieces down because of a dead piece in the bank (ex, The WoF Switching Armies)
