Ok

I made a WoF, inspired by chye3mc's Don't Mate Green, called Red Light, Green Light. Your goal is to mate green but not red.

Even though it does have a lot of luck (My opponent won the second game because red checked green) is it a good idea?

I mean feel free to look into the concept more, I would there needs to be more unique elements (there are already quite a few “mate the bot in the center” variants). The luck issue definitely needs to be solved while you experiment around because it’s possibly going to affect most mid to high level games.

If you don’t know what I mean by unique elements, here are some examples:

https://variants.world/posts/10044 (Red Sentinels) features a multi-stage game; mating the bot unlocks the Red munchers which can be manipulated into attacking the opponent. Checkmating Yellow does not necessarily give that person the win but resolves 3 fold repetition.

https://variants.world/posts/10149 (Don’t Mate Green) has a more forceful ending where checkmating Green instantly results in a loss. It appears simplistic while promotion is a main goal in achieving a win in the game.

Your variant does have Red as another “poisoned royal”, but it overall feels like a slightly more complicated remake of Don’t Mate Green. There’s certainly potential.

(P.S., there’s a WoF called Red Light)

I also made this... uh... thing.

The first few moves are redundant, so I’d be hesitant to upvote this if it were submitted just based off that for starters. Haven’t looked into the middle game or endgame yet though.

Can you send a link to a game of this variant? I can’t read Neo piece font that well lol

That variant was just a joke I'm not posting it

I'm just waiting for the day somebody makes "Check Checking Checkered Checkers."

Alright, but during my testing I changed some pieces to make it more fair.

Here's the link to one testing game I played:

The parts of the board with the king are sort of unbalanced due to bishops on the same colored squares. Some parts of the board may never have activity on them.

Hmm.. I was also told the same thing in another testing game but I didn't know how to solve it. How do you think I should solve this?

Bug: you can't place walls

Darn.

It would've been so cool though, a labyrinth built by the players.

New Idea: Grasshopper Arena II! (Pawns can double-push)

RandomChessPlayer62

Looking for testers for this position.

It may look simple, but trust me, it isn't.

The weak royal sergeant means that one wrong move can be fatal, so you have to be careful when moving any of your pieces, as it might be your only defense against checkmate that you're sending on the attack.

And most likely, due to the small board, you will be under constant threat with no room for mistakes.

This creates a challenging and complex position and a (hopefully) fun game.

also pawns can only ever move 1 space at a time and promote at the opposite end of the board to either a Wazir, Ferz, or Archbishop (You can promote your sergeant to Archbishop, making the endgame mostly about stopping the other sergeant and pushing yours)

looks like a draw to me. But nice to see a new member

Do you mean that one side can force a draw, or that if both players play the best moves the game will end in a draw? If the former, I'll try to fix it. If the latter, then at least the game is balanced, also a plus if the draw doesn't occur early on.

The main problem I see is that the Archbishop is so much better than all the other pieces.

Do you have any recommendations for what to replace it with? Also, the Archbishop in the position comes from an earlier 4P version where I used a bishop, but when I made it 2P I realised that the bishop could only be on squares of one colour so I replaced it with the archbishop, and the bishop was my variant's weakened queen.

A general would be somewhat better. Still a little OP.

On small boards like this, a general is significantly stronger than an Archbishop, for instance in collateral worlds, the general is stronger.
