Old Gen vs New Gen

Ok, hear me out (this may get disregarded immediately).

So, recently, I've been thinking about all the high-rated games I've spectated, and how they typically try to mate one another from the start.

I'll get to the point now: I think it's bad.

Why might you ask? Here's my reasoning behind it:

  1. The person who actually delivers the mate with their queen (in most cases) gets it taken. Substantially weakening them.
  2.  This should be the obvious part, IT'S SOLO.

People say all the time that teaming is necessary to live but what good does it get you when you'll end up sacing (queen most of the time) in the process?

(New gen doesn't actually exist yet because there's like no High rated players that don't cooperate with their opp)

For anyone who actually read my post and gave it some thought: I thank you greatly.

Giving up the queen to eliminate a side player and gain 20 points is worth it. Especially since the other players will balance the game with trades.

It hardly matters, because in the 3 way stage the players will play against the player who's ahead on point/material, to keep the balance.  Being a queen up vs two players is basically useless if they 'are friends'. It's often better to not be the one who's up material, to fly under the radar. "Look I'm weak, attack the other guy"..

Sort of, the point situation is much more important than the material situation though, your material strength should be judged relative to the point lead of the respective player. The only situations where you want to be low on material and those when you are leading in points.

This says it all doesn't it?

You can't become high rated without cooperating with your opposite.  All those who refuse to work with their opposite are stuck at 1900

In general, you can see the situation, with out considering positional and other variables, as follow: u get 20 points in exchange of 9 points: not bad. And you get rid of one of the rivals. Point is: I agree with you in the sense that many times it is convenient to not give mate once that side rival is weak enough nor to give to the opo 20 free points so easily. At this moment, as you said, it is solo, and many times players seem to not realize it.

You're right. How do you propose a new gen player should play?
