Hi all,

I am ~1050 rated rapid and I am getting to a level where I am reasonably conformable playing against 1. e4. However when confronted with d4, c4, the réti, etc. I am just struggling hard. What are some of your recommendations to play against the opening moves? I've tried semi-system openings like the hippo, but these just do not work out for me.

try to play the kings indian defense against d4 and Nf3

try out simple d4 d5 systems or if you want something more concrete, pick up the bogo indian defense. Against the reti/c4,, you could go for a KID type of system.

against c4 you could freestyle and play normal developing moves. but there's a problem. there's an aggressive english system called the botvinnik system. It is very effective against g6-based systems by black. Here it is:

White's plan is to castle then support the pawn push f4 and then launch a kingside attack. Often it is very potent as seen by one of my games against my friends:

Against the Botvinnik English I recommend opening up the centre by a d5 strike.

d4 d5 can go into a theory-heavy queen's gambit.

TheFirefromChess

try Tarrasch variation against queen's gambit and c4

Against almost anything other than e4, you can usually play some combination of ...e6, d5, Nf6, Be7, O-O in various orders as your first five moves and reach a playable position. You eventually want to break with ...c5, possibly via ...b6 or ...Nbd7. That's pretty much gotten me to where I am right now because frankly openings don't matter all that much.

CheessLordeX

I learned Grunfeld which is awesome, but for you Irecommend either Budapest and Albin gambits or Learn benoni Ideas (fun)
King's indian and Modern are really good and dynamic too.

EnCrossiantIsBrilliant

Nf6

Finchetto

Against 1. d4:

1...d5—A solid response, either as the Queen's Gambit Declined or Slav Defense
Grünfeld Defense—For players who like dynamic positions
Nimzowitsch Defense
Queen's Indian Defense

scaryhugedragon

Just play the kings Indian Defense.

scaryhugedragon

It can be played against anything.
