As I'd commented on topic "Specific toxic behaviours", "Betraying is not illegal to the rules", so u don't need to worry about it.

I had also betrayed my friend, but luckily he sympathized with me. Now we're friends.

I have not much experience in any form of chess, but as I was playing bridge for almost 20 years, I know what is the proper behavior in a competitive game. I can assure you that the only correct way is to play 100% of your abilities in order to win. Does not matter if the other person is your friend, your best friend, your beloved, your sibling or your parent. During the game is the opponent and your target is to beat him/her. It is not betrayal if you beat fairly your opponent. Personal I always feel bad when I lose, but I would feel worse if you would play soft against me. I would thought that you consider me as uncompetitive player who cannot win a fair game. If your friend cannot handle a defeat by you, then do not play again against him. However, if you play, then always play to win.
