Position of the day 10/19

Hey guys!

Back to work after a short break, I would like to share the following position with you.

As always, to find the correct move provide full analysis (opponent's threats, positional evaluation, tactical evaluation).

Notice that you should first decide what's the nature of the position (tactical or strategic), and you do that by looking for existing tactical motifs in the position (checks, captures, pressure, tension) to know what to concentrate on- tactics or strategy.

If it's strategic- positional evaluation should be most important. If it's tactical, tactical evaluation is more important (tactical motifs for both sides), while positional evaluation will play a major role at evaluating variations, by looking at the situation at the quescence point. This is the stage where the variation is over, meaning both sides don't have tactical motifs that are usefull for them.

laghachess

hello evryone

in this position the best move according to me is Bh6 putin the black Q in some trouble

;))

Spochman

What kind of trouble do you see?

MoonLightKnight

I agree with Laghachess. Bh6, Qh8, Bf8, trapped queen.   I FIRST thought e5 would be good, but Bh6 looks much better.

Spochman

Are you sure the queen gets trapped, Marcus?

I remind you, you are entering a tactical variation, go by the book (and by the correct order), checking tactical motifs- checks, captures, pressure and tension.

Which of these are possible after Bh6?

fbhjr

Is the queen still trapped after Bd4+ ?

Spochman

No, but did you reach the point of quescence once Bd4 was played?

If not, continue the variation. Do you see a drawback to Bd4+?

laghachess

yes i see Bd4 & Bh4 but thoses moves are not stronger than our Bh6

i'm looking the position again trying to find if there are some other ideas

for exampe doubling Rs on h colonne ...

Spochman

lagha, you still didn't convince me why you call Bh6 "strong".

tip about convincing a chess coach- support claims with analysis and variations Tongue Out

Patrick307

I do see that Bh8,Qh8,bf8 only somewhat traps the queen, the queen is allowed to take the rook in exchange Qxh1

Spochman

Does black get enough compensation for the sacrificed material in this variation, Patrick?

Patrick307
[COMMENT DELETED]
Patrick307

Yes they do, when the queen takes on the rook and white repcatures, the king can then take on the bishop and black and white will have equal material.Variation below.

Spochman

since when Q=R+B ?

and btw, is this the point of quescence? because if not, you must look further searching for this non-existing compensation in this variation for black.

Patrick307

Would this work?

It protects the queen and also at the same time gaining a little bit of counterplay on the white's king side.
Spochman

would this work for whom? remember you're finding a plan and move for white.

again, have you reached the point of quescence? because if you didn't, how can you decide if it worked or not?

Patrick307

Ohh yes i just figured, that wouldn't work well for black, i need to analyze it more deeply and carefully...

bigmikefrancis

I like this better

Spochman

why? does white get any advantege? black gets 2 pawns (including having the bishop pair in an open position) for the exchange.

bigmikefrancis

I think the positon is better for white, yes. Black's night is ugly, and after Bxd8...Rxd8, white can prepare to double rooks on the h file. Rh3...Bc8, g4...Qf6, Rh1...Bxg4, Rh8+...Qxh8, Rxh8+...Bxh8, fxg4
