The gamerule is purely meant to be a challenge; it technically doesn't introduce any new strategy other than memorization (unlike variants like Fog of War).
Similarly, this is why although Blindfold and Pieces Face Center have their uses in some variants, the CGA team will usually omit such rules as default when adding them to the NCV or WoF list to encourage beginner-friendliness and for general quality-of-life.

I don't think that it is a problem if they want to play that, I think that whoever accepts the challenge is at a severe disadvantage. If I go and play a custom position fog of war, I look at the position before accepting. With a checky variant, I can't see what I am playing, and the creator can. That makes it far too hard to play.
Fog of custom position can be a “hide and seek chesss” variant
