Change your Difficulty setting to Hard or Extra Hard
The default of Standard has the average rating of puzzles lower than your current puzzle rating, so you get fewer points on a success and lose more on a failure. The harder options, give more on success and lose less on failure, but you'll tend to miss more puzzles overall, and see similar overall rating changes.
I feel like the standard puzzle difficulty should have the same number of points lost as won

Puzzles have ratings and the rating changes are calculated the same as if you're playing a game against a player of that rating. If you're 1900 and miss a 1600 puzzle you should lose more points than if you get it right.
With Extra Hard it's pretty much like you suggest, as the average rating of puzzles is higher.

how to change the difficulty?
Why do they give you only THREE chances?! I honestly think we should get more. I talking for people who don't have premium membership BTW.
Why do you only get free chances and then have to pay like $10 a month just to get five more chances that's ridiculous

Use the Setting icon on the feature or under Settings > Gameplay > Puzzles

As mentioned, it depends on your Difficulty setting. I'm mostly + 7-9 and similar amount on failures

Yes, it's very annoying, especially when you do puzzle rush or puzzle battle.

there is a settings button right under your puzzle rating
