Is the solution to the last problem the actual moves played in the game?
Puzzles: Deflection!
Black_Knight,
To answer your question; No the game stopped after Qe8! Benko resigned because the other moves are forced. Even if black interposes with his queen first, once BxQ and then RxB then pxR the result is the same. The king cant move and neither can the knight. The only way to open up a square for the knight is to go f5 and then this allows Rg6 and so on and so forth. If black moves his queenside pawns first then white moves his queenside pawns and waits for zugzwang (or f6) which would be the only move or Ng5 which throws the knight away anyway.
I like to show the outcomes so people are not confused as to why the players stopped when they did.
Thanks for the postings. I started to get the hang of the 'deflection theme' until the Shirov match... and the Fischer match was several moves i never could have figured out
In the second one, last move... Why can't you mate with queen yo g8? In other words, the last move doesn't HAVE to be the bishop...
Chabad,
I located this postion through research and I just put the moves in the way the games happened. Yes either move works, but Feher played the bishop move I guess.
