If you read the reasons we accepted this variant on the variants.world submission (https://variants.world/posts/137), promotion to king is one of them specifically because this variant is crazyhouse. If we had promotion to something even like rook then the game would be too promotion oriented and less about positional play.

It’s a really interesting variant, especially because the pawn structures are different. Every time I played it, I have to resist thinking that my pawns are defended diagonally when they aren’t. lol
