Quick question: Is there an option to not promote?

I'm making a variant where every piece is bad (moves always 1 square) and I want to make an option for pawns to skip promotion. How do I do this?

Oh, and can we get spell 4pc?

Yes, and make it if you want it.

Can I just set the home rank to the rank b4 the promotion rank?

You can set the home rank to right before the promotion rank, but I don't see how that would help with getting rid of promotion.

@kirfickleslups you can jump over it then

you can set the promotion to a brick which is useless as skip

You can set promoiton to the 3rd rank and then have a pawn to move to the 4th rank and that's "skiping"

The main problem with promoting to a brick is it creates a permanent, unmoving block.

You can promote to one of the variant pawns like berolina stone general etc.

Actually I tried that like a few days ago and it didn't work

I do think that there should be a setting that lets players choose not to promote a pawn.

In what scenario would that be helpful in though? I’m talking real examples of variants where no promotion isn’t a good compromise, and promotion to nothing is essential.

I've actually been designing a variant that would work almost entirely off of that option (and another one that would let you pick multiple promotion ranks). Standard duck chess, except pawns can be promoted after any move, but only to a duck. Similar thing (-duck chess) would work well with promoting to bricks, or from something like a sergeant w/torpedo rules on to a dabbaba or ferz, so the player is often asking themselves "is it worth losing a piece entirely in order to make this permanent block" or "is it worth getting a less valuable piece in order to get sideways movement?" No variants ofc have been made with these rules, but I think those examples are okay
