Chess.com doesn't always respect the rating range you specify, so even if you say you don't want any opponent more than, say 200 points lower, you will occasionally get opponents as much as 500 or 600 points lower. If you resign immediately, though, it seems you won't lose any rating points. If I were in charge of running the site it would be the opposite, but nobody asked me.
When I play bughouse games, if the other team has a low rated player the higher rated player will resign. It gets annoying.
