This chess variant was invented by ichabod801. The rules for the game can be found in his blogpost. The symbol for the Amazon is two spears crossing to make an X.

Post your move using algebraic notation. The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. Every time I see a new post, I will update the picture of the board and turn it so that the side who's turn it is comes up in front. Make sure you track this topic so that you know when it is your move. As soon as you join the game post something so that I know. It seemed not, I just want to be certain.

You are correct. Pawns cannot be used for upgrades, and when a pawn is upgraded it loses its original movement abilities.
