No, it's exactly the same as in chess.

When you PLAY (!) in Internet (for example at SC24, playok, ...) you see always YOUR color faced at bottom moving upwards.

But when you WATCH a game (for example in books), sente/black is always at bottom. It's like in chess books, where always white is at bottom.

Of course for you PLAYERS it would be good to rotate the board (but only one time), but for the observers I think this will only irritating when flipping the game each move. You have to think about what side you like to analyze and then use this board-orientation the whole game.

introducing Sente (tookArook): I am new to Shogi and learned the rules about 6 months ago. I mostly play on brainking.com (12 wins and 8 loses) and so far have a rating of 1643 but that is mostly against other western players that are new to the game too. I have played on Shogi 24 and lost bad.

I have been playing Western chess for over 20 years and right now have a rating of over 1900.

I picked up Xiangqi 2 years ago and still love that too

Hi,

thanks for your introduction - I understand, now.

Still you are new to Shogi, it seems your playing skill is not bad (till now Smile).

First I thought you will loose (for reason maybe I should tell later), but P8e-8f seems not good at the moment (so your opponent probably didn't know about this opening). I don't see any dangerous after P8g-8f for this moment.

yes still lots to learn for me in this variation of chess but it is still fun win or lose :)

just a test to see if board fits better...this is current position too....Amy I used BCMShogi and did save as... with pgn extension and then inserted into here and then resized it ...does it look ok? I tried the bona compact theme but it does not have coordiantes so went back to normal and think it is ok with resizing...any feedback?

BCMShogi is absolutely flexible and individual configurable - there is no need to rebuild a new EXE. The coordinates for bona compact I hadn't made before, because I don't need it. But I have done it, now.

It's a little squished horizontally.  And the background doesn't come along?

I personaly like to save it without background (=transparent background), so you can put it above somewhat you like.
But if you like it with background, you can edit the file

Themes\Bona\settings.ini

and write there:

[Bitmaps]
BackgroundInsert=1

Okay, testing also how images are used at chess.com ...Hmm, looks okay, or? Smile

BCMShogi

Or maybe individual pieces would be more nice???

So every player should create his (or her Wink) own one, please.

For example:

Okay, it's more optical effect, but not good for playing/observing/analyzing Shogi. Cry

tookArook

I like the compact version with the coordiantes on there...how do I update my copy of BCMShogi to do that? or do you have a new release?

Yes, I like the compact version with coordinates also.

tookArook

about rotation...BCM...replied exactly what I thought..online games have the players view at the bottom :) but if my opponent does not mind it always from my view point that is fine with me (I need all the advantages I can get Cool)

I can see how it would be annoying for the observers for the board rotating all the time but I do not know what the best answer is either

if this was like the normal chess.com site then the players would see their board correctly but since this is a forum with pasted images not sure what everyone thinks is best? maybe after this game we can set up games with fellow group members on brainking or playok or shogi24 and we can use this forum to discuss those games..post images and discuss moves etc

tookArook

guess for adding coordiantes I can go into themes folder and edit bitmaps but do not want to do that without permision from the author (BCM)

Yes, this is basically a one time job for me...just to create a demo game to have in the Shogi Group...not something I'm going to be continuing in the future.

tookArook

lots of work..don't blame you at all Amy :)

maybe we can just create our own shogi.com site and get more and more people to play games....just need a website...a good server...good advertising

any takers to make a team?

maybe even name it AsianChess.com and include Xiangqi and Makruk and Korean Chess too

tookArook

yes I play shatranj (chaturanga) too I play that on schemingmind.com

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shatranj

tookArook

domian name shogi.com is taken and so is AsianChess.com....no sites there (just advertising) but names are taken :(

maybe need to call it chessofasia.com etc

also just curiuos...anyone play cannon shogi? seems like a weird variation (mixes in the cannon features of Xiangqi)

or how about shogi22680 (available in BCMShogi) it is like chess960 with random positions 22,680 random positions :)

I will make a new release, soon.

Oh, it's very easy. Wink

Make a decision which side should be playing upwards and use it for the whole game.
This graphics are for the OBSERVERS!!! The player should flip the board them self.

At first one thing: the graphics are in general NOT (!!!) from me!!!

Still I made some modification, but the basic images are from others.

Look at the (long) Credits-Section of BCMShogi.

So you can edit and change them as the CREATERS of them (not me) allow (normally, they are freely usable for NON COMMERCIAL use).

Understand BCMShogi like a document-software: like you can write Documents as you like with such software, you can use BCMShogi to create and modify all you want.
But if you create nice looking themes (graphics), it would be nice to distribute it and make it usable for other people, too. Smile

In my opinion there shouldn't be more and more shogi-sites, each making advertising for them self and so you will have manny shogi-sites with LESS people.

Better make advertising for the ONE AND ONLY shogi-site and let meet ALL shogi players there, at ONE point!

tookArook wrote:

For example at playok you can play Shogi, Chess and Xiangqi.

Maybe take in contact with them and work together for more game(variant)s.

Maybe this will be interesting for you: Shogi variant

Anybody there like to play Tai shogi with me? No, just kidding. I have not only shogi in my live and not thousands of hours left for only one game.

How about http://www.shogiportal.com ?

I'm thinking, maybe travel to Salzburg next Saturday. It's not sooo far away. But I for myself didn't expect so much from this film.

Maybe you can see me in this film - they were also in Pullach were I've played. Wink

Oh, would be nice.

I also tried this variation myself against the computer.

Well, if tookArook (Kirk) could make his "shogi.com" as good as chess.com, then I think it would have the potential to become the one shogi site.

Not that I'd wish that job on my own worst enemy.Smile

Oh, I'm answering myself. Laughing

Was that screenshot I've seen correct??? I haven't seen the silver, was it really there? In that way of course P8f is not bad.

What ever, I wish you good luck and big success!

It is thus far early to speak about any advantage generally. If we calculate  moving pieces, then blacks have a small advantage (3 pieces against 1 in white). In the camp of blacks it is sufficient pieces for success defend. But so both players have it is many passive pieces. Therefore let us look, who more rapidly will be able to develop his pieces and first he will switch over to attack. Then it will be possible to speak about some advantage.
