Hello All! Thank you for letting me join. It looks like this group is rather quiet these days, but I thought a new post might attract some attention. I made a website last year to help American Shogi players find each other, as it seems like there's a fair bit of interest, but not a lot of resources available for newcomers. Please take a look and feel free to reach out or reply here with any comments or questions: https://shogiusa.com/

I host a free software package on my website based on the WinBoard user interface, configured for Shogi and Shogi variants. Through the two included AIs ('engines') it can play the following variants: With drops (through the Shokidoki engine): Shogi (9x9) Euro-Shogi (8x8) Tori Shogi (7x7) Judkins Shogi (6x6) mini-Shogi (5x5) Without drops (through the HaChu engine): Heian Shogi (9x9) Sho Shogi (9x9) Chu Shogi (12x12) Dai Shogi (15x15) Most variants can be played in a western as well as an oriental representation. For download, see http: http://hgm.nubati.net/ShogiVars.html

Just an informal survey, but which do you prefer to play? I'm rather partial to ranging rook. I played shogi in a local club (years ago before I had kids and had time to commute to the club) and had a match against a strong player. Yet, I played ranging rook almost beat him. Why? Because he rarely had an opponent who did so and wasn't familiar with the Ishida shape I employed. I tried that opening on tookArook in a game we're playing currently, but I messed up and he punished me for my mistakes. Ouch, but what a great way to get back into shogi! Anyway, I feel that static rook vs. static rook is tedious and boring...especially when each player goes for an anaguma castle. Ugh!
I found shogi apps in the Google Play store, but they only let you play against the AI or another player via hot seat play. Anyone know of one, in Japanese or English, that allows live games againt a human opponent a la 81dojo?

I have to admit that this thread is a bit of a troll... but I just read this comment by Edward Lasker in his book The Adventure of Chess (1959), and it upset me: "Japanese chess...has certain curious peculiarities the origin of which has never been traced. One of them is the right of the player to place any captured man on any unoccupied square, instead of moving a man of his own. The man thus replaced on the board joins the army of his former opponent. This makes a capture doubly valuable. On the other hand, it introduces a tremendous complication without increasing the depth of the game." Do you think Lasker was right about "complication without increased depth"? Amy

Hey everyone, I just want to let you guys know that I opened a Shogi Wiki. You can find it here: http://wiki.81squareuniverse.com Like Wikipedia and other wikis, anyone can edit and create articles. So I would like to encourage you guys to contribute everything you know about shogi. The more contributers we have, the more content we'll get, and the more successful it will become. With everyone help, we can make it as successful as Sensei's Library is for igo. :) Thanks.

I'm not sure if y'all know already or not, but just in case: Currently, the 57th Ouza title match is being played between Yamasaki Takayuki 7dan and Yoshiharu Habu (Ouza). Right now as I make this post, they're playing the third game of the best of five match. Habu has won the first two games. The best part is that these games include comments - and the comments are being translated into English! Takodori is translating them all live so that you can see what Japanese viewers see, and get professional insight on the game. Official web site (in Japanese): http://live.shogi.or.jp/ouza/ First game (Sep. 4): http://live3.shogi.or.jp/ouza/kifu-en/20090904-en.html Second game (Sep. 16): http://live3.shogi.or.jp/ouza/kifu-en/20090916-en.html Third game (Sep 25): http://live3.shogi.or.jp/ouza/kifu-en/20090925-en.html Be sure to check it out.
