Should I Buy One?

I've been looking at the DGT e-board along with the wooden pieces for some time now.  I currently have a nice Drueke wooden set I bought many years ago.  My question is what more do I get by purchasing the DGT setup?  From what I see watching the demos there wouldn't be much difference between using my current wooden board and the e-board.  I play on Chess.com for all my games (3-day).  I'm not trying to be negative here.  I really want one but they're not cheap, at least for me, so I'm looking for some additional advice from folks who already own one.

Thanks

So, you can use them to play live games here and at the other big online chess site, you have to have them attached to your computer either with Bluetooth or USB.

I don't think there is much benefit with just daily games.

You can also play against Fritz which can help you train

I mainly bought so I could play otb without looking at the computer screen, being that it's supposed to call out the moves but......it doesn't work, I spent almost a year trying to get it to work.

So now I own the most expensive chess game recorder.

I've gone to all the forums I can find on the subject and no one has been able to help.

You need to use a Chrome extention to get the moves called out here. On the other big chess site their integration calls out the moves automatically

Message me and I can try to help you with that tomorrow if you like. Tell me what you have already tried

I bought the cheaper set up with the plastic pieces and use it for playing against Fritz and Shredder; I haven't used it to play live chess as it just seems quicker to use the laptop ,but, it does help a lot more when you are working through books and trying to make it stick. Beware of dropping the pieces....the plastic set up is very robust and can take a good drop and is cheap to replace; good luck in your decision.

It does allow you to play chess without looking at the board as both programs call out the moves; just makes sure you have used the right software took me a while to set it up but no issues using Shredder 13 and Fritz 17; not the old Fritz you get with the board.

Thanks for all the input, guys.  Really appreciate it.  Still on the fence, though.  The good news is the board and pieces i want are out of stock where I've looked so I have some time to make up my mind.  ;-)

I bought my Blutooth DGT with the Royal pieces on Amazon from the vendor "US C-Games Trade" for $745 shipped.  https://www.amazon.com/DGT-Bluetooth-WALNUT-eBoard-pieces/dp/B07429B2X5/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=dgt+bluetooth+board&m=A2K6FUEA88DIS6&qid=1615916161&s=merchant-items&sr=1-8

ETA was one month but it arrived in 10 days. I'd do it again. It takes a little patience and some digging/playing-around to configure it as you want it, but it's worth the time. I hear the Customer Support is very good, though I haven't resorted to it personally.

There's some configuration work that must be done to get the board to announce moves. One has to drill down into the "Preferences" (where that is, depends on the Chess software [Arena, Fritz, etc.]) and choose "announce". Although the Rabbit config and the software "Options" show that the announcement is 'on', it didn't announce for me until I clicked the redundant "Preferences" choice.

FYI, you don't use the Rabbit software when using it here. It goes through the LiveChess application which sits between the board and chess.com. That application doesn't have a built in way to announce the moves, so you need to use a Chrome extension.

Good morning BaronVonChickenpants
I use Chrome and DGT Live chess I have reinstalled all plugins, all software and DGT drivers nothing makes the first move is well taken into account on chess.com but not the following?

I own a DGT Smart board and very happy of it. I find it useful to play against an app which I have on my android smartphone (Acid Ape). The app speaks out the moves, I simply move the pieces and play. I also connect my DGT3000LE clock to it, so I can also read the moves on the clock and know about the remaining time. I use it to simulate real games like I was at the tournament, so I can concentrate 100% on the games in a setup which is the closest to reality. I also connect it (via the App) to chess servers. When I connect it to the PC, I use it to play against chessbase engines, analyse games real time with chessbase and also practice openings, using the "opening training" feature of chessbase in combination with the DGT. I also can play on chess.com using it. In a few words, you can do lots of things concentrating on the piece moves and not on the PC/screen. - IMHO.

Anyone having problem connecting the DGT? mine hasn’t been working on chess.com.

BaronVonChickenpants

Have you ever had it working?

After reading all of the comments here I decided to bite the bullet and buy one.  Got the Royal pieces and a DGT PI.  Coming this week and am really looking forward to it! Again, appreciate all the feedback.  happy.png

Congratulations. Royal pieces are awesome. What kind of board did you choose ? I mean the Smart board or a wooden one ? Mine is the Smartboard with timeless wooden pieces.

born2see

Walnut wooden board.

Very nice.

In my very personal opinion, one uses the board to record games played on the board or play games online or against the computer or analyze positions, which is otherwise only possible on the computer screen. So the question boils down if one wants to record games or use a physical board instead of a computer screen, which difference is a bit underestimated in my view. Maybe there are other points of view. I would be happy to learn about other ideas as well.

Hi Guys

I just purchased and received my e board with timeless pieces. I installed the rabbit driver, works fine. Installed Fritz, switched on the DGT board: no luck, Fritz does not register any moves.
