Hmmmmmm...

Wait, you mean capture anything?

Wind

Hm, interesting!
Wouldn't that be a draw?

MayimChayim

lol...

Eh you will just lose

I do not see how ctk works here...

I mean,exploding is technically a capture right?

no because there are a lot of atomic endgames where the two kings are touching gay yet one side is winning because they can zugzwang them by squeezing them out of the corner lol. this would make the game more unnecessarily drawish

Ah,right

Generally I tried to follow a no-suicide rule, eg checkmating yourself or capturing you own king should not be legal. Exception is N-check + CtK or FoW, where walking into check can take your final life (and I just noticed it results in a draw, will fix)

KxK atomic has been a proposal for a while now to try to make the best result for perfect play be a draw instead of a loss. I think it would make it far too drawish without actually addressing white's underlying advantage but it has been proposed.

Another option that I am more fond of is where black is able to select one pawn (from either the white or the black army) to remove from the board at the beginning of the game. Like an advanced way to give pawn odds. I've done some fairly deep analysis here and it appears it should work out in theory but still allow for very complicated games in practice. You can try this variant out on https://vchess.club/#/ if that interests you as well as lots of other variants. It is labeled as "Atomic2". Just be aware that you'll likely need to grab a partner to play there beforehand as the site is pretty dead.

vchess also supports randomization in various forms for all variants allowing for atomic960 which is another proposed way to negate white's first move advantage in practice as it would remove theory in many people's eyes. I don't think it would hold up if atomic960 ever got popular though as some of the positions are really bad for black, with at least one position having been worked out to a forced mate, and a human is certainly capable of learning a couple of ideas for some of the strongest 960 starting positions.

An extremely strong player by the name of tipau has proposed a change where players would alternate placing their pieces on the back rank as they saw fit, starting with white, then proceeding to black until all the pieces are placed. This would give black a chance to respond and 'counter' white's first move advantage with a piece placement setup advantage. I haven't looked into this a ton however but it would add another layer of depth, and likely would help black.
