What's really interesting is, the mob spawning radius (They have to spawn a certain ways away from you) is actually larger than their sight range. So, if you're cought at night without shelter, stay away from shadows, and STAND STILL.

If you spawn in a desert, get out of there and find some mobs. Otherwise, you'll probably be subsisting on Rotten Flesh. This applies especially to Hard mode, where you could starve to death.

The only reason it doesn't work is mobs can move. Just colomn and zombies can't get you.
