Guys, please comment Laughing

This was a nice game against Tyrrhenus I think we were both fairly evenly matched, I think I made a few blunders and could have played the endgame better. Any comments from others would be useful.

3. I had intended to play a version of the Ruy Lopez here but your knight move threw me. I noticed that I could go into the four knights game and took that option. Was that your plan? Or did you have a defence you were going to play if I went with the Ruy Lopez?

5. Decided to play the standard book move and castle here.

6. As you were attacking my knight decided to go for exchange rather than retreat.

7. Chance for me to grab a pawn from the centre.

8. Attack your bishop to see what your response will be.

9. Another exchange I'm still up a pawn but now have doubled up pawns on same file as you this could be interesting!!

10. Exchange of Queens only option for me and brings my castle nicely into play.

With your knight grabbing my pawn we are now equal.

11.Bring my bishop out that both castles can now come into play, also looking at Bishop possibly capturing pawn on c7

Think you have a similar idea?

12. Setting up for bishop to catch a pawn or Knight to move to threaten castle on a8.

13. Your castle has prevented my bishop capture of your pawn therefore move knight for possible capture of pawn.

14. I think you have similar attacking plans possibly?

15. Move my bishop to safety.

16. See opportunity to grab that pawn finally. Puts me a pawn ahead in game.

17. Hoping to double up castles on same file and use knight to capture both your castles and put your king in trouble.

18. Knight to safety and covering my advanced castle.

19. My castle vulnerable here so have to take pawn first time in game I am a major piece down.

20. Decide to grab another pawn here hoping my pawn numbers and structure will be useful in endgame.

21. Advance another pawn and attack your knight.

22. Your move here helped me in exchange

23. Try to attack your bishop

24. Move my rook to safety

25. Get my rooks back onto same file

26. Getting ready to attack bishop on a4 or pawn a6 but lost a pawn in process.

27. Not sure why I moved this, possible better to move pawn from b4?

28. You now have both rooks on the same file decide to grab pawn and threaten your bishop.

29. Move King to safety

30. Try and attack your bishop again

31. We'll see if you will exchange rooks.

32. Worried about my king being checkmated so decide to exchange rooks.

33. Chase your bishop again

34. Want to get ready to advance my pawn on the a file

35. Trying to get your rook onto the a file

36. As the a file pawn is blocked going to try and advance b file

38. After a bit of a stalemate decide to try something different, maybe I should have just continued moving between files to see what you would have done?

39. Still looking to advance a pawn

40. Hoping with this move to capture one of your pieces or to advance my pawn.

43. Decide to go for exchange and try and get promotion with pawn on b file

45. Need to bring my king over to capture your bishop.

48. Don't think I'm going to succeed in promoting pawn on b file due to your king's location so advance another

49. I still have a chance with b pawn so advance my king in his direction

51. Advance another pawn as looks like will not be able to save b file pawn

52. Once this pawn was captured I think I'd lost the game.

54. Trying to stop you advancing pawn

55. I should have taken your pawn here that was a blunder by me I was trying to clear a route for my remaining pawn. Once your pawn moved forward it was a lost game for me.

3 - yes, I wanted the two knights out ASAP and you did the same, the our bishops.... interesting position, full of possibilities

26 - I thought you would have moved R2-d3.... Anyway I think this is when I started having more chances to win... but only if it was possible to take at least a couple of your pawns on the side where only one of my pawns was (and having a Bishop would help!)

35 - now the Bishop starts being an effective weapon. I love Bishops in the second half of a game

42 - I was happy when you moved b5: now I could force you to take my rook with your. According to my calculations, your lonely pawn did not have any chance to go to Queen and my King was eager to become part of the fight: I just needed to be extra-careful (I am the king of blunders).

The rest was just a matter of time. But this was really a nice enjoyable game Smile

This game looks pretty good until the white player wins a pawn on d5.  The hardest thing for me is when he decides it is not worth defending that particular advantage and plays a3 on the very next move :(.  The other important moment was Rd7, on move 12 or so.  Placing the rook into a discovered attack can be done, especially in longer games, but it has to be calculated perfectly that none of the discoveries do anything.  After that moment, black does well to hold onto the advantage to the end.  Good game.

Hi Heister

Thanks for your comments -After a3 i was unsure what to play could you  possibly suggest best move(s) to take advantage of that position?

It was a nice game and black played well as you mentioned

Thanks Steve

What was the reasoning behind 19. Rxc7 instead of 19. Bxc7 and exchange rooks?  A rook on the 7th rank is great, but it can get pushed around by the two rooks, bishops, and knight.

The end game was impressive by both players.

Tyrrhenus

Yes, Aaron, I really enjoyed the end game. All the game was interesting, but the finale was just great fun, and I think I can speak for Steve as well.

Hi Aaron

Sorry for late reply just looking over game.

I moved Rxc7 as I was aware his knight would have taken my rook if i left it there. It was a great game overall and the endgame really got me thinking.

Thanks Tyrrhenus

Thanks Pal :)

hi stevie.  Merry Christmas everyone!  After a3?  You really had the advantage before a3, and the move a3 is one of the problem moves :D.  Do you notice that he already wants to play Bxc3?  (he would like to take the knight so he can then take the e4 pawn) So the move a3 just helped him do what he wanted to do already!  Oops :).  How about 8. d3 or 8. f3 to keep that extra pawn.

The game evens out for a few moves and then you play some nice knight maneuvers to end up with 16. Nxb7 which puts you ahead again but then give it back with interest on 18. Nc5 where 18. Na5 might have kept the piece on the board.

After that exchange, where black is up a piece, your only hope is to queen one of the c pawns.  However you decided they were not worth defending. :(.  There weren't any practical chances after that.  Black played very well!

Tyrrhenus

Yes, heister, good analysis, I made similar considerations. I think I played decently but it was Steve who, in the first part of the game, had better chances.
