The way I got to 1200 in 2 months was just play over and over again. And don't study any openings. Instead find out how your opponents are beating you or what attacks they do. Also this is how I learned my first opening.
A good book to read is called How to reassess your chess 4th edition by Jeremy Silman
A 2300 friend suggested it to me and its been great. Although this might be for more 1400+
So another book he suggest was the Amateurs Mind by Jeremy Silman I haven't personally read it myself but I'm sure its a great book from what I have experienced with How to reassess your chess 4th edition.
And you were asking about puzzles? I when I didn't have an account played all the free daily puzzles which is plenty. You don't want to do puzzles to much otherwise it just won't help you( I can't really explain why) but I do know this to be true as Levy Rozmon said you should only do no more than 15 minutes of puzzles a day.
The Silman books are great but they are not good for someone who self-proclaims that they suck at tactics. Basic tactics need to be learned before tackling those books.
My suggestion:
If you are a kid, play a lot and do puzzles.
If you are not a kid, get a book explaining with words and figures, basic tactics (pin , skewer, ...). After that book do puzzles.
Greetings!
Bottom line:HOW CAN I IMPROVE AT CHESS TACTICS???
I’m new to chess (playing for about 3.5 months) and I suck at tactics and recognizing patterns.
Do I focus on puzzles specifically for pins, skewers, double attacks, etc.? Do I only focus on puzzle rush and/daily puzzles? Do I practice puzzles OTB and/or online? Can anyone suggest a schedule to practice puzzles and share their experiences with learning tactics?
My apologies for multiple questions. I’ve been receiving great advice from this club thus far. Thank you very much in advance!!!
I suggest first themed puzzles of increasing diversity, then puzzles that conceal the theme. You must first build pattern recognition and then calculation. Also, you need both tactical patterns and checkmate patterns.
One of the best books to begin with is
Also excellent is Bruce Pandolfini, Beginning Chess for simple tactics and Renaud and Kahn, The Art of the Checkmate.
If you are ambitious, you might try Sergey Ivashchenko, The Manual of Chess Combinations. There is a iOS app (other platforms, too) with the contents of this book. It costs less than the book, but is not sequenced as well.
I got from 500 to 1400 by doing puzzles and doing a lot of game review. Keeping track of critical points in the game when I felt like I didn't know where to move. You'll find that the computer makes pretty easy work of your position. Also, if you are platinum or diamond you can do an analysis from your position and play it out a little bit more as well. My way of thinking on this is that you can't improve on what you don't track. So game reviews are always helpful. I also will take a day once a week and only do puzzles and not play any games. Its helpful in recognizing patterns.
Look at how your opponent starts don't concentrate on what your doing look at the opponent. Follow their moves and learn new tactics.
If you don't know common tactical patterns, you can get a book or Chessable course to teach you them. Chess is extremely heavy on pattern recognition.
If you already know them, spend more time on each puzzle, identify hanging pieces, danger levels, etc

The Silman books don't teach tactics at all, and you only really need them when you're probably around 1800 Fide, as you can just do tactics to get there. Also, this doesn't answer the question at all, and chances are that the Silman book didn't help you. By the way, there's something there called the "Armaggedon Discourse", which is to scan for possible tactics in the position! You have to do that first, before concentrating on the imbalances.
You could use the book that is called chess doctor my 1800 friend suggested it so I could use it to learn from my mistakes
It is useful, as is everything Pandolfini writes. I have a copy, but have not used it.
I mentioned his Beginning Chess, also by Pandolfini, above because I have experience seeing what it can do for players at the OP’s level.
Do rated puzzles or puzzle rush. If neither works, go into custom puzzles and select the ones you think you are struggling with. If that does not work, then just analyze games
