   Please participate creating the Community Variant!



Stage 1: Concepts Suggesting 

     During the stage, members are able to post their concepts in the forum. These concepts can be their old declined posts; rules-combination-based concepts; recently-created concepts; or any other things that are legal to submit. After there're enough concepts waiting to be reviewed, there'll be voting hold to determine which concept will be the final concept of the Community Variant.



Stage 2: Variant Improving (Current Stage)

    During the stage, members are able to suggest changes and modifications for the Community Variant and post them in the variants-workshop. Members can also testing variants and giving feedback to them.



Stage 3: Variant Reviewing

   During the stage, members should extensively testing variants and requiring feedback from other members in order to determine the best version of the variant.



Stage 4: Variant Submitting

   The Variant will be submitted to both variants.universe and variants.world.

If you meant the concepts, there'll be a voting hold for members to decide the final concept

Black and white are on a team. there is a clock with a bot for like 35 moves. In the walls, there are horizontal trenches where bots have to pop out to attack white, with the king, and black is white's knite in shining armour and gaurds him. sywerian, fatel, and stonewall. imortal bots.

Concept: "Truth Bombs"

The Main Idea:

The core idea is a fog of war with 'truth bombs' that let you see a significant portion of the opponent's position for one turn to help with attacks. This is achieved with pawn promotion and capture modules on the sides of the position. The three different pieces that you can promote to offer some variety in what squares of the position you want to observe. This part of the variant (the side pawn modules) is not to be changed unless a fundamental problem is found.


The rest of the position is due for some upgrading, as it is simply the first thing I put down. Some guiding philosophies for improvements:

  • There should be significantly more short range pieces than long range pieces
    • Having too many long range pieces largely diminishes the purpose of the truth bombs and cause the king to be too easy to capture accidentally
  • There should not be too many pawns (or their variants)
    • Since the promotion squares are a rank closer, and the pieces they promote to are intentionally very strong to be able to use the truth bomb mechanic
    • Solutions: few pawns, pawns restricted with dead pieces, pawns on the back rank, no initial double move (underlined are the ones I selected for the rough outline I am posting here)
  • There should be none, or very few jumping pieces (knights, dabbabas, alfils, etc.)
    • These pieces can capture the bombs before they promote, which removes the core intent of the variant; it should be safe the use the truth bombs at any time in the position. Adding jumping pieces encourages only using them shortly after the opening, and less during the middle and endgame, as the jumping pieces advance into the position.
    • I chose to bend this rule in the concept game with the dabbaba, but it is quite difficult to capture one of the truth bombs with it as the plan sacrifices development. I would not be opposed to moving, deleting or replacing this piece in future updates, I just think that there should be at least one jumping pieces for variety's sake and the dabbaba seems to be the most balanced option.

Some foreseeable problems with solution ideas:

  • Problem: the berilonas can just get stuck in the position if an intentional plan to free them is not made
    • Possible solutions: move them closer to the center or remove the dead pieces blocking them.
  • Problem: opening the game with a centralizing ferz might be too powerful (it doesn't allow the opponent to do the same, difficult to diagnose/address in 2 moves or less)
    • Possible solutions: move or delete the ferz (added to complement the wazir the first place)
  • Problem: shuffling could be pretty powerful
    • Not quite sure how to fix this.
  • Problem: Is it a NCV or a WoF?
    • I don't know, it's really in limbo as of this post, it has close quarters resembling a WoF, but I feel like the final position might present enough variety to maybe qualify as a NCV. This issue should be addressed first as it determines the direction of Stage 2, improving. In my personal opinion it resembles more of a WoF, but I'll leave it to a popular vote or agreement if we decide to continue with this variant. If we decide to turn it into an NCV, maybe increasing the board size would be a good idea.

I suggest making a 4P variant together as a team that uses a forbidden combination, such as:

1. 4P + Atomic

2. 4P + Spells

3. 4P + Crazyhouse

4. 4P + Crazyhouse + Giveaway

And for a bonus, maybe make it asymmetric?
