The Guide For Beginners
Hello, The members of SugarBlossom Variants Community!
Did you just randomly stumble upon this club? Don't know what a custom variant is? Don't worry, this guide will help you understand everything, just keep reading!
Let's get started!
1. Intro To The Three SBV Clubs
SugarBlossom Variants
SugarBlossom Variants is a club originally made by @yu-x897 with an intention of uniting community of chess variant enjoyers, everyone can post some fun forums to ask questions or share things!
In chess.com, there is this tab called 'Variants'. This opens a server full of features and opportunities, but the main focus in this club comes from 'Custom Variants' - Variants that are made with mixing different pieces, rules and board sets.

For a detail guide on how to make a variant, check out a blog I wrote, it goes through everything in detail.
Variants.Universe Join!
So, you made your own variant what do you do now?
First of all, join the Variant.Universe club. It is essentially a place to submit your creations to see if they are worthy of becoming a variant you can play for rating points and have its own leaderboard! I wrote a guide here on how to submit your variant properly. Good luck!
Also, you can submit your custom puzzles there as well! For example, if you got a beatiful combination in a game of atomic chess, you can give us the position with a solution, and will add it to the puzzle library! Pretty cool, right?
SugarBlossom Variants Playing Join!
Once the submissions / your submission has a verdict, there are 2 ways it could go:
The submission gets declined. The verdict points out the issues and potential ways to fix them. You fix them and resubmit your variant for a chance of acceptation or drop the concept and start working on another variant.
The submission gets accepted! Congrats! Now your variant has your own leaderboard and you can play it rated!
Once again, you'll have to join a club, for playing custom variants. There are a lot of variants to play there, and we would sometimes hold arenas there, too!
Once you join, you can find your variants in NCV or WoF section, depending on your variant format! Each NCV has it's own forum where you can play games of it and send in the forums to get rating!
The higher you rating is, the more likely you can get into HALL OF FAME! You can get here by getting any of these requirements, and your name will be in our club forever:
If you always gets confused by the common abbreviations we use, you can check them here!
