Why don't people learn? Think of this as a punishment. If you leave, you loss rating
Suggestion
Is there a difference if someone is just late or leaves? Suppose he just arrived home and starts the computer 5 minutes after the starting time?
I do believe when you sign up for a tournament, the start date is announced.
Also, most tournaments have moves every 24 hours to 2 weeks out. Even if you are not at home, you should have the ability to make a move on your smart phone.
We are talking about live tournaments. Does someone have the true answer? (green pawn staff member)
Please notice that all chess players cannot afford a smart phone.
Have a good day!
"As soon as the tournament starts and the pairings are generated all player's clocks start immediately. If no move is made before the time control is up then the game will be auto-resigned as a "timeout" or loss on time."

That doesn't say if the rule about aborting the game when there's no first move applies to live tournaments. It makes it sound like it doesn't, but it doesn't say for sure.
But back to the main topic, I agree with LhcAndrewB that someone should lose the game if they sign up and then don't play. And if you kick someone out of the match before it starts, what if they log on just as it starts?
Sometimes in live club matches, people register for the match but when it starts, they are often offline which leads to losses on their club. So, there could be a feature through which the server identifies the offline players and removes them from the match a minute or two from when it starts.
