Currently in setup chess, the only limits to what pieces you can place (in standard setup chess, or any other setup chess variant) are which pieces the player can choose from, and the total number of points of material he’s allowed to have.
My suggestion is to add a third limit, where you can set a cap on each specific piece.
For example, each player can choose:
No more than 2 Queens
No more than 4 Rooks
No more than 4 Knights
No more than 4 Bishops
No more than 16 pawns
1 King (mandatory)
Total piece value must not exceed 39 points (not including king
For variants using the Setup Chess rule, the creator of the variant could place these limits however high or low he wants.
