Suggestion: New fairy pieces & Fairy editor

It would be very fun if we could create fairy pieces. non-default fairy pieces should be explained e.g. in chat & game "additional info".

+1 if u like or -1 if u dont like

The logistics of that are incredibly complicated, how would you set rules and a graphic design?

Also, 21 fairy pieces is quite enough imo, and seeing as fairy piece variants are already the least played, variants where you need to learn a new piece setup to play them would get even less play.

Same as @TheChessDude991, many people already struggle with fairy pieces. it would be very hard to learn more fairy pieces created by people every day.

+1, I think of this the same as an NCP, but it is NCFP(New Custom Fairy Piece).

the fairy pieces creator should have an upload button which only allows to upload Black .png images that can be transformed into red, blue, yellow and green by the computer.

21 fairy pieces may be sufficient for some players, but there are also players who only play variants with them. Guessing that the motif is originality, these variants will have approximately the same popularity, or even bigger (if the players like original things they will probably like new pieces to default pieces, right?)

that would create TOO much default fairy pieces. we should build an editor. I think in something that is based on riders and on single-step things.

e.g. to create an elephant:

([...]means an input, *...* a button, ✓...✓ a checkbox)

moves [1] + [0] squares *-*        ✓ rider ✓(enabled)

moves [2] + [1] squares *-*        ✓ rider ✓(disabled)

No, they aren't (not this again...). You are comparing fairy piece variants to variants without fairy pieces, which does not make sense if you want to categorize by "variant type". This means other mechanics such as takeover, deadwall, N-check, etc. should also be included, and fairy pieces are definitely on the more popular end of that spectrum. The least played variant type is either blindfold or ghostboard.

Other than that, agreed. I think the only fairy piece it would make sense to add is the cannon as cuber mentioned since it is the only official fairy piece that is not in chess.com.

how does the cannon moves?

the cannon moves like a rook and captures only if there is a piece between it

Firstly, this is far not so simple as it seems to do. I'm currently developing a bitboard dynamic fairy piece builder, however, it is pretty complicated. The main point is that even with good architecture really hard to implement.

Secondly, how are you going to handle the security threats related to the builder? Such a builder is an ideal vulnerability for DoS (Denial-of-Service) attacks.

Thirdly, who on earth will manage all new pieces and variants? It will require even more staff on a completely new category to review fairy pieces too, and the fairy piece builder will attract more players.

Finally, people will always complain about the fact that in some pieces no one cares about that can fly over enemy pieces or the piece that creates friendly pieces. If the fairy piece building system will be so rigid, it will mean a lot of new FP suggestions which will be really hard to manage.

Noone will manage fairy pieces. They should be directly applied to an NCP (Or WOF)

Points 1 and 2 are still valid, though.

I know that the cannon is used in chinese chess, it's a fairly simple fairy piece.

yes I am Chinese in fact so I play Chinese chess. My country used to say United Kingdom, because I live in United Kingdom. It's now International. Yes. The cannon is worth more than a grasshopper. I'd say 5 points because it creates powerful pins. It pins not 1 but 2 pieces at once that in Chinese Chess, there's actually a mate pattern based on this pin. Arabian mate is another checkmate pattern. Also, the double cannon is another mate. The double cannon would be really powerful and would be as powerful as a rook on one file, even more power. A double cannon actually prevents blocking checks. It's just so powerful.

a double cannon on one file or a rank

without being separated by another piece.
