I just screamed and cried so much like I've never screamed and cried before... because of a queen blunder...

Dude, I've reached 2182, 2185, 2192, 2195 three times, 2194, I literally had seven chances to get 2200 blitz, and I'm just not getting it, I'm just choking, and now I get hit with a seven game losing streak...

I'm so tilted, this is all I do everyday, just play chess praying I can overcome that one obstacle... and yet I'm beating myself up, screaming everywhere, hitting walls, throwing stuff around every loss... seems like myself March last year lol, I thought this devastating overreaction would've just gone away or something

I wished I never knew chess was a thing in the first place... my world was probably so much happier without chess... I hate chess, why do I lose so much, it makes me want to rip myself apart into pieces

There's a strong chance that we over value particular round numbers just because they look good and they feel like natural goals, which takes away from the achievement of surpassing a new rating peak or getting to a point around it.

Also look for the positives here:

#1 you've reached this near 2200 several times so you're likely to get to this point again

#2 the more times you achieve this the more likely you will pass it. Even if you would win only 10% of these games then you've always got a chance of getting that last win.

#3 since it sounds like you're not playing your natural game in these pressure situations its not your chess that you need to control.

The good news is that you are nearly there and passing this goal should happen at some point, just make sure that you achieve this in a positive way.

It also sounds like you're not enjoying your chess so it might be worth taking either a short break (perhaps just play some unranked for a few days, play something you wouldn't normally play?) or taking a short pause on your goal to focus on changes that will help.

When you are ready to pass 2200 it will happen but trying to force it will only give you stress rather than noticing how significant the achievement of reaching the heights you already have are.

guys I think we all need to take some distance, I know it's not 'just a game' for many of us but thing is, life's more than chess. Take some time away from it, make life enjoyable with some other relieving activities, sadly chess isn't the most relaxing hobby there is, so it might be a good idea to complement it with something a bit more calming. I do mountainbiking, and with that I can have an empty mind, almost dying everytime also gives some sense of relief once you get back in the car xD, I think something along those lines, if not sports, maybe something that allows you to breathe and empty your mind, like singing or meditation, might help a lot.

I'm sorry you're not having the best time now, I do hope it gets better, count on me if you all need someone to talk to

how tf did you drop that far? 1300 knows basically nothing about chess compared to 1800 you had to be throwing

I don't know how much I could disagree with that..

I agree. In a week of sleep deprivation and academic stress I dropped around 150 points in rating, 400+ rating points is a lot but I trust you'll start going up again, Rohan, just like I did recover my points as well. Also, I want to remind the other guys this is the 'support, venting and safe space' forum, not the 'judging, gatekeeping those who are venting' forum.

Also, I think you deem 1800s way too highly, I see higher rated people lose all the time to lower rated folk on our sunday tournaments, the difference is in the consistency, a 1400 will lose a bigger % of games against an 1800, but that's different from completely being unable to win, especially against someone struggling with burnout and/or with mental or physical health problems.

Yes, thank you so much for the kind words. I feel like you're spot on!

yes me too.

Avatar of rohan_asif

LOL guys it's fine. People don't know how to be in someone else's shoes nowadays. Otherwise we wouldn't have such comments. I'm still on a tilt mostly because of distractions and work but I don't mind any comments.

yep you're just extraordinarily wrong but we won't get mad over it.

the difference is minuscule, a disciplined 1300 could get to 1800 in just a couple of months

Avatar of nooslam

by that logic any and all chess players could reasonably get to 1800 in a couple of months. yet they are only 2% of players on this website, i also routinely beat my 1500 friends with ease. the rating difference is massive

Avatar of nooslam

so why aren't yall 1800 then?

Avatar of cegalleta

Ok, first of all, I am indeed close to 1800, I got to 1700+ on my practice account, beat a 1940 yesterday and 2 2,000s on lichess, I'm only playing relaxed games on this account so people won't prepare against my main openings for coach champs, and yes, all chess players with enough time dedicated to it could get to 1800 in a couple of months from 1300-1400, only 2% do because it takes a lot of time and effort, but it's not like they couldn't. We're all amateurs players after all, don't let your ego get too high.

yep, it also took him well over 1 year to go from 1300 to 1800 so he really shouldn't be yapping.
