I guess it is to give a fair score as it that player never joined the tournament.
Team match result correction for closed accounts
Until a few days ago, the results in the encounter above have been "0-1" in the first game and "1-TO" in the second game, summing up to 1-1. This must have been changed very recently.
The directors of the tournament can change result of the games, it wont affect your rating, but the result of the match will be more justified.
Interesting. Seems like chess, com is starting to implement some kind of adjustment of closed accounts, maybe with the idea to go into a similar direction as some of the team match leagues here on chess.com have been doing things for some years now.
Maybe it is so new that they are still trying to iron things out, maybe that explains how this seems to have been introduced so far.
Varego, this is not about tournaments, this is about team matches. The organizers of the team match (admins of the two teams) do not have any influence on how chess.com displays the results of the team match.
The current state of affairs is simply confusing:
- Correcting a cheater's 1-0 to become 0-0 may be reasonable from a fairness point of view.
- Correcting a cheater's loss on time to become 0-0 is not particularly reasonable.
- Anyway, as it stands, the current changes in cheaters' results do not carry through to the match result displayed on top of the match page (as well as on the match overview page of a team). So what, after all, is the idea of these corrections?
Sorry, meant team match. I known some of my team matches has been corrected after closed accounts earlier. If not by admins, then I don't know how it is done.
I mean in a match where somebody cheats.... would it be fair for them to still earn points for cheating? on the flipside is it fair for a team to lose points because they didn't know they harbored a traitor? I think this is supposed to negate any affects of team play.
Currently if your opponent in a team match was closed for fair play, the games are being canceled out.
But we are continuing to discuss this and determine if that is the best option.
In the past, there has been very extensive discussion about this in the different team leagues on chess.com. I think it would be a good idea to consult the league directors about this question (start with @ilmago).
At the moment, the situation is simply inconsistent and confusing. (Individual results as displayed do not match up to the team results.) Whatever the solution you opt for, it should be implemented consistently.
I wouldn't cancel out the games entirely, otherwise it means that a player that scored points against a cheater will have them removed. Maybe have just the cheater's results blanked out (so a draw would be counted a ½-0).
As for consulting league directors, different leagues adjust results in different ways, so I would not suggest speaking to the main directors.
After some discussion and consideration of policies governing some over-the-board events, etc., we've determined to change the logic so that, as many have suggested, the offender's opponent is awarded the full point at the event level. (This will apply to both active Club matches and active Tournament rounds.)
Should it occur that both players of a given game are closed for Fair Play during a Tournament round or Match, the game will be a draw for event-scoring purposes.
Thanks for all your thoughts! We hope to have this adjusted very soon!
Thanks for the update. Your sketch of chess.com's plans leaves two questions open which also will sound familiar from the discussions in the league forums:
- Which type of account closure will lead to result adjustment? Only "Closed: Fair Play"? Or "Closed: Abuse" and "Closed: Inactive" as well?
- Will there be a cut-off date for result corrections? Most probably, if an account is closed, you don't want to correct all results of the respective player in the past.
What about finished matches? I give an example here where the results from both players has since been wiped out (board 2 was originally 1-1): https://www.chess.com/club/matches/live/535/games

Has chess.com introduced some match result correction for closed accounts recently? E.g., my loss against @chipman1212 (whose account has been closed due to a fair play issue) on board #5 of this match:
https://www.chess.com/club/matches/chess-team-holland/795762
now is listed as "0-0":
Or is this an ordinary bug? After all, my win on time against @chipman1212 (in the second game, after his account had been closed) is also listed as a "0".
