The 1200 elo curse!! (Oh, the tilt!)

I keep getting VERY close to 1200 elo and then fumble every game. Twice now I've gotten to 1193 and then I play like a moron when I'm just about to cross the line, dropping loads of elo.

Anyone else had anything similar happen to them? What would you advise?

I was 1370 a few weeks ago and I tilted so hard I dropped 130 elo points but I'm now 1340 now ^^

Same here, @GM_Gash.
I restarted playing chess in early 2023, and in November 2023 I reached 1150 Rapid. So I thought, 1200 shouldn't be far... After a year, I'm still struggling. I hit 1194 this summer but never crossed the threshold.

Funny enough, I managed to do it earlier in Daily, where I am now around a comfortable 1250.

What to do? It's hard to say. I studied books and videocourses, played quite a bit, joined a local club, done a ton of puzzles. I would say that my average game has improved quite a bit, but I always manage to slip in that blunder or two to lose from 1000s.

Hopefully, it's just being patient, don't think too much about ratings, and the results will come?

Happened to me a lot, it is just that you cannot control your nerves. Maybe try using hide ratings during game option and play a few games you would not know if you are close to 1200 or even crossed it.

Yup, it’s always the nerves that gets me so I have hidden opponent ratings so I don’t be like: “God they are 50 points above me, I’ll definitely lose.”

It’s really only nerves and the fear of losing rating

Just open your mind and realize that 100-point milestones are completely arbitrary. Also that just because you temporarily reach a peak doesn't mean that's where your true strength is.
