I just call it the "royal indicator". Here's how it (doesn't) work.
- Supposedly, it marks which piece for each player is "royal" and must be protected.
- As Black, both indicators are upside-down.
- As Black, both indicators are on the exact opposite position as the royal piece (e.g. d1 for e8)
- As a spectator, neither indicator moves with the piece, unless you attempt to manipulate it.
It's the same exact topic actually. You call them 'icons', someone call them 'flower things', I call them 'banana stickers'.
