The Long Tournament

We had a good discussion about setting up a Long Tournament - see thread Tournament Idea - started 30 May with 14 posts.

Several formats were proposed. A number of common points emerged namely:

1. The tournament's purpose is to encourage long live games.

2. It is a background event - it does not compete with formal tournaments.

3. People should register to participate but there is no minimum commitment or compulsion to play.

4. Maximum of 1 game per week.

5. Flexible as possible - people arrange the games - agree times - time controls etc and the winner advises the outcome to the TD.

6. 1 point is awarded for playing: 1 point for a draw and 2 for a win.

7. There was no clear agreement on a handicap - so I suggest we defer for the time being. We can always introduce one later if the tournament proves popular and there is demand.

8. One point I'm adding - and tell me to remove if not acceptable - games played as part of another tournament are not eligible. So, for instance, those people playing in Maxamillon's current tournament cannot count those games towards their total in this tournament. No doubling up.

9. The first tournament to run until 31/12/10.

10. If u are happy with this - please register your interest by sending me a private message. I will inform everyone when there are sufficient people to make this viable.

11. Remember you can register without commitment. I will issue reminders periodically to encourage people to play.

12. Those who register will be asked to include other participants as friends and to challenge them periodically. You can also advertise your availability by posting here. We can start a Long Tournament challenge post and you just add a thread.

13. I will TD the first tournament.

14. I hope this proves popular because I believe we need to encourage live play if our group is going to flourish.

Best wished to all.

I just want to say that I'm generally interested, but with Maxamillion's tournament going now, that's a lot of games I'm already committed to.  I guess I'd sign up anyways just to add numbers, and maybe I'll get to play a little too.

Can you specify the time control, or perhaps anything greater than G/75, or so, is okay?  I'd vote for 45/45 suggested by Dan Heisman!(that is 45' reservoir of time with 45 seconds added each move--it's equal to about a G/75 to 90)

I think for the first tournaments to start with  60/0 minutes and unrated because i am new here if is possible , please . Live chess here isn't good enough like on FICS or ICC which you can have trouble to end the games in peace. I hope that the live chess become stable enough to play in relax and not in fear to loose on disconnected.

I've never lost a game here on disconnect, and I've played a few dozen 60+ games, many of us 90+.  It reconnects you if you do temporarily disconnect, so it's quite good.  Perhaps a year ago or so they dramatically improved reconnections.

I suffered some disconnections during 1st NSF tournament, but I was able to restart my browser and get back into game in a minute, so I don't think it's a real issue, when you come back to live chess it automatically loads the game you abandoned, I don't think that any of my opponents even noticed (played 3 games in a first tournament and had this problem twice). About the unrated games... I think it would be better to have it actually rated, for the purpose of next tournaments which hopefully will be played in different rating categories, for that we need more members of course, but the more games you play the more accurate your rating will be and easier to fit you in to your category (we might actually introduce a limit of let's say 40 rated games before you can join).

Why is live chess better on FICS than here?  Is it simply a matter of disconnections?

Do we have more disconnections with other nations than in the U.S.?
