I see two paths for black's N to improve 1. b8 -- c6 and 2. f8 -- h7 -- g5. White's lsb must stay on the a3-f8 diagonal to stop the N from going to c5. Bd6 will stop route 1. Nb8 Bb4 will allow the Bishop to go to d2 and having greater activity once the N moves. I do not see how to stop Black from taking route 2 Nf8. This might be too slow as white's King can beat Black's king to the a file pawns.
Bishop d6 will also stop the knight to move at all as the only remaining save B8 position is then also controlled by the bishop en the Knight has nowhere to go
I'd have said Bd6 as well. Leaves Nf8 (assume we don't want to trade) but then Bb8 wins the a7 pawn so I think it cuts off Nf8 as well.
Solve for white:
Diagram 8.11- black’s knight is very restricted by the f6-d4 pawn chain, and on top of this it is partially dominated by white’s bishop.
Challenge: can black’s knight break free? Since it’s white to play, and the goal was already identified based on our observation, try to find ideas for white to keep black’s piece bad while creating progress. What is the evaluation of this position?
