What were the old 'useless' promotion options that used to exist?

Notes would be a better place to post this.

=EHLMOQVZ btw

(I posted it in forums just in case future people are curious too)

I'm making a logical guess here, so don't quote it, but I think:

Chancellor's rook move was useless, because Red can only get in with bishop/knight moves.

General was too short range to be as useful as H

Knight Riders probably weren't useful because of how small the space was.

L and Z are there just to capture queens that probably can't even get out, so those could be cut down as well.

general is still there

Oh, I thought it was =HQLVZ. Whoops.

it's useless anyway

WHAT

Avatar of noahfavelo

here are what the current pieces are useful for in my opinion.

H = a powerful piece for green to promote.

L = red can promote a camel rider which can control three squares in green's base.

Z = red can promote to Alibaba rider to capture the green promotion square.

Q = Green can promote this piece for extra horizontal mobility very late game.

V = green or red can promote wildebeest, as red this piece allows for rapid deployment as it can move into green's base, and green can use the piece in special cases.

M = an under-used but powerful piece for green, place one on i12 to control a large portion of the base.

There also used to be E, G, and O

These were never used, and I just put them because I did not know all the strategies that would emerge and wanted to give players other options.

@noahfavelo is the creator btw so ^ is the response you’re looking for 🙂

Also to add context to those who don’t know what OP is talking about, Thermopylae used to have more promotion options prior to 2022

Oh? I didn't know that Custom Variants could be changed after they've been submitted.
