I went to a park in 2019 and there was this kid I was playing with. They spoke very quietly and had a gender neutral face. I asked their gender (boy) and then we somehow got into an argument over how insulting the question was. His dad comes and gets all up in my face about it. I refuse to back down. Was the question bad? Sure, but I genuinely didn't know and I'm pretty sure his name was one of those names that any gender can wear. I remember the dad getting aggressive. At the time I had zero fear of adults, so I argued back. Eventually, my mom intervenes (I was a bit far from her and this guys dad was next to where we were playing so she didn't notice til we started shouting at each other). Soon the park closed and we all left. I cried when we got in the car cause I didn't get why they were so offended. I'm embarrassed that I cried. I don't regret asking, since it wasn't meant maliciously. I understand why they were upset, but I think an adult shouting at a child like that is shameful.
tldr I asked a guy his gender, his dad got angry. I'm embarrassed that I cried.
