UI Feedback

I've been using the chess.com app daily on my train/bus commute for over a month prettily heavily and on my tablet at home for the past week. Over this time I've loved having the app, and it's been a lot of fun. My phone is an HTC Sensation running Cyanogenmod 7.1, the tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

At the same time, I have experienced some frustrations. I thought it might be useful to share these in hopes the dev team can take the feedback and I improve future releases. I work in software, so I know how valuable customer feedback can be.

So here are some issues I've experienced:

  1. When logging in on the tablet, the login screen only has a portrait mode. Personally, I usually use landscape mode. This is somewhat jarring.
  2. When using an analysis board in landscape mode on the tablet, the forward and back buttons to step through moves are anchored to the bottom of the moves list. This means the buttons move as the number of moves changes. This isn't a problem in portrait mode. Consider locating them somewhere better.
  3. The move highlights can be hard to see.
  4. The way the menu button is used along with pop-up menus is really not intuitive. This looks particularly bad on Honeycomb tablet.
  5. As others have reported, Live Chess doesn't currently work.
  6. When Live chess does work, the game selection criteria don't work the same way as on the website. In particular, I don't see a good way to do a relative rating filter.
  7. The Settings page is poorly highlighted link on the main page. It also has options on it that seem to be misplaced. Invite a Friend and Contact Us probably don't belong here.

I know this is a lot of issues (and to be honest, I could find more) but I'd really love for the Android App to feel more polished and consistent. I really like the chess.com site and community and hope that this is actually useful.

Good stuff.. Thank you! We're going to make the Android app better.

I'm running cyanogen mod on a galaxy nexus, and the chess.com app will not let me log on.  it worked fine on the default android os, though.
