Useful ches rules to know

We all know about the 50 move rule and en passant but I can think of a couple of tournament rules that could save or win a game.

These are my interpretations so might not be watertight but I think the jist of them is about right.

The first is if the position is dead drawn, e.g. king and rook v king and rook, and you're down to your last two minutes you can claim a draw. This stops unsporting players making you lose on time in dead drawn positions.

The next is if your opponent makes an illegal move then the move must be taken back but, more importantly, you should be given an extra two minutes.

Feel free to add any more that people might not be aware of. I've used the two above but noticed blank stares from watching players when I spoke up at the time; makes me think there are not as many people as might be thought who are aware of some of these rules.

These rules also apply to the game of chess.

The one that gets me is the ungentlemanly conduct, players holing the button on the clock, moving the clock, threatening their opponent etc, if you draw their attention to the rule they say,"I didn't offer a draw".

Your mention of the two minute rule amused me. Years ago, I played in a rapidplay. One game my oponent had a couple of minutes left in an opposite  bishop ending.

I sacked my bishop for a pawn making it 2 pawns for a piece. My opponent stopped his clock and went to his mate, the Controller and claimed a draw under the 2 min rule(I should have been grateful he didn't claim a win). We went back to the board, the Controller said I'll watch to see if you are trying to win. After a minute he said you are not making any progress, it's a draw. I told him if my opponent wouldn't move I couldn't make any f....... progress. But the age of reason was past and this Controller is still employed I think.

there is a grey area in the rules here since as you say, how do you demonstrate progress? The controller watches the rest of the game but if the losing player simply waits for his flag to fall then there can be no progress.  in the end we have to rely on integrity and respect for the game and this is sometimes lacking.
