Q #1  -Is the following vacation time use in violation of the below Chess.com policies?

Q #2 -How does Chess.com deal with a violation of the "spirit" of a poilicy if the policy is not technically violated?

Chess.com policies

 Sportsmanship Policy

  • Do not make your opponents wait unnecessarily

 Fair Play Policy

  • Do not artificially manipulate ratings, matches, or game outcomes

Facts

  • Player A organizes a 3-day tournament that allows vacation time.
  • Tournament start date May 17, 2019.
  • Player A has completed 3 of 16 games (5 if the 2 games the forfeited games where another player timed out are included).
  • Group play has been completed for all games, except for games against player A.
  • Player A has over 500 games going simultaneously – so cannot keep up with all of his commitments.
  • Player A puts up a vacation flag after almost every move.
  • Player A has a Diamond Membership and therefore
    1. cannot time out but automatically goes into vacation mode after his time expires;
    2. can maintain up to 90 vacation days– virtually unlimited      The math –“earns” 5 days per month as a diamond member, and vacation time is activated automatically before he times out
  • he has 3 days to move per tournament rules, then vacation mode is activated
  • he “earns” 5 days per month, so, at a minimum, only needs to move 5 times during the month, or once every 6 days – to maintain unlimited vacation time
  • the result is player A is not honoring the rules of the tournament that he create and that the other members signed up - they move every 3 days  - he moves every 6 days or sometimes after more than  6 days

Thanks

There are some tournaments that don't allow vacation. But I agree it's annoying when players do this...

Avatar of Tryllekunstner

Yeah agree! It should be an option that allows the same on daily games. Like "Do not accept vacations"

Avatar of Batman565

I like that idea.

This also happens without using vacation time. Even stalling until last hours every move (in 3-day games) is annoying as hell.

Here, I don't mean people who have 10 ongoing games and just log in rarely, it's fine for me (those people also sometimes make their move earlier, as well as reply in real time if I manage to play my move while they are still online, so it's not as bad). I mean people with 500 games that are online very often but wait until last hours of the 3 days of time.

It seems that the only option is to chose no vacation tournaments.

This abuse punishes those who use the vacation policy legitimately.

I think either a 3rd category of "limited vacations" where the vacation time can only be used once or twice per tournament would solve the problem.

chose=choose

or automatically implement this into the current vacation policy- that is vacation time outs can only be used 1 or 2 times per tournament.

Also a good idea.

Usually when I set up tournaments, I ALWAYS go for no vacation

Avatar of Lucky_Dragon_No5

In the future that is what I will do as well unless Chess.com makes some changes to the policy.

Vacation should not be an option on tournament if you ask me.

I agree with Tryllekunstner.   It is a TOURNAMENT fer gosh sakes!  It is supposed to be played in a timely manner!

In USCF correspondence tournaments, players get a set number of vacation days. I remember playing in tournaments with 6 players, round robin, and each player received 30 vacation days. The tournaments could last over 1 year and the players used their days as they liked. Life can be busy outside chess and vacation days are necessary, but when you've used them all up, that's it, you're not getting any more so it's best to be strategic and not abuse them.

Perhaps they should have the option where you can exclude players that are playing over say 175 games at a time.

don't get me started on the vacation policy here - it needs a complete re-work. I've posted before extensively and my feelings are known. So I'll simply agree with you and leave it at that.

Vacation abuse is typically only when a person is intentionally using vacation to prolong a lost game.  How this playing is using vacation will cause them to run out very quickly as they are charged a full 24 hours each time they go into vacation even if they are only in for a short period of time.

Did you read the post?  He will not run out under your current vacation system.

  • he has 3 days to move per tournament rules, then vacation mode is activated
  • he “earns” 5 days per month, so, at a minimum, only needs to move 5 times during the month, or once every 6 days – to maintain unlimited vacation time

And it should be an option, that is like "I do not play with Vacation"

Also, initial questions were never answered

Q #1  -Is the following vacation time use in violation of the below Chess.com policies?

Q #2 -How does Chess.com deal with a violation of the "spirit" of a poilicy if the policy is not technically violated?
