So there's this variant/gamerule which one of my friends introduced to me over the board and it was pretty fun but I have no idea what its called or if its even a thing and cant find it anywhere.

Its a bit like crazyhouse where if you take your opponents piece, you get to place it back on the board (immediately, doesnt cost a turn to place back), but instead of that piece becoming your piece it remains your opponents piece but can just be placed anywhere on the board(with some restrictions . pawns cant go on back rank). So if you sack your queen you still keep your queen if it gets captured just that your opponent can put it in the worst possible position for you.

The games usually end up with 'jails' where you put your opponents captured pieces, such as in the corner blocked by other pieces and pawns and its more about positional play rather than tactics. I think its pretty fun although the games can last quite long, although this could probably be helped with rules like kings cant capture or having a position with quite isolated royals.

anyway itd be pretty cool if anyone knew what its called or if its even a variant, and itd be extra cool if it got added as a gamerule <:

also hopefully this isnt breaking any rules its my first topic post thing

Huh so basically what you're describing is crazyhouse, but the pieces don't change color when you capture them.
This isn't a thing on chess.com yet, but it seems very intresting! (Shoutout to the CGAs for adding this)
However, one problem I see with this is that you're never forced to put down your opponent's piece, so why would you do that? (If you do it, you're giving the piece back to your oppenent, which is never great)

What if placing down your opponent's piece is forced?

Avatar of VishTheFish771

well in that case you're in stalemate (Because you cant move anything else) and in that scenario you're generally cooked

it can be great for smothered mate

Avatar of VishTheFish771

Yeah but you can't put your own pieces back, only your opponent can

you can put your opponents pieces back to achieve smothered mate

its supposed to be sorta like duck chess where if you capture an opponents piece you then place their piece back down before your turn ends

so it was like rB take yQ,and in this crazyhouse red push yellow's queen on the place where red's bishop placed,is it?

you get to choose where you put their piece back down so the point is that you can try to destroy their position by capturing and doubling their pawns, isolating their king, trapping their queen etc
