We have a member banned for cheating - what should we do about it ?

Hello,

Unfortunately, one of our members was recently banned for cheating.

I found it quite disappointing, because I thought this team had high standards when it comes to cheating, but it happened.

Now, I suggested we resigned 3 of our 4 ongoing Vote Chess games, where martos took part, out of respect for our opponents, because I think it's very unfair to have someone with engine assistance in your team, especially when playing against opponents who have to rely on their own means.

FT agreed to resign the game in the 'No Engine league', but thinks it would be an over-reaction to do the same in the other games. He will probably explain his thoughts better than I can do it myself.

Nevertheless, I wanted to take this opportunity to ask for everybody's opinion here. As you know, cheating in VC has been a plague for many years, and it's only recently that Daws has started a titanic effort to try and fight this practice.

When I was invited in this group (by petitbonom if I remember correctly), I was told this was a group with high standards, and which didn't tolerate cheating.

So my open questions to all members are :

- what do you think we should do in the ongoing games where martos took part ?

- in general, what is your position towards cheating in VC games, and what would you suggest that this group could do to fight against it (if you feel it's important) ?

It was I that suggested you be invited hicetnunc.

Sad to see a member banned for cheating.

Of the four games you mention, the only one Ive been involved with is the one v Legion , where Ive said it was only right to resign.

Of the others , as you have invited comments , its logical that where Martos had an input, we should also resign. Thats my opinion, but as Im not involved in those games its for others to decide.

You know my thoughts on cheating  Im sure, VC or otherwise I detest it.

In view of the group name I think it unwise to be seen to do anything other than resign any game where a member is banned for cheating.

How to prevent it?  Any new members to be accepted by the group as a whole , with a sustantial vote chess history?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hope other members will speak their mind too.

Regardless of contribution, he was providing opinions in the games and I think we have to resign them to be true to our team name. Otherwise we are no different than the many other teams with cheating problems. Let's set an example of what should be done and not hide behind excuses.

My contribution: you are hanging this way too high, how about other teams, like team "x" have atleast 10% cheaters or so, and I hate discussions about cheating, I just wonna analyse and vote, that's all about VC for me.

Another comparison/analogy would be "doping" like Lance Armstrong, should the whole team defeated (kicked out) for all challenges (Tour de France...) he participated ?

I guess I'll have to step out of this group. I'm not really contributing and am not in tune with what I thought this group was about.

Thank you for sharing your opinion, Paul.

I'd be happy to hear from other fellow members as well.

I'm sorry there weren't more discussions going on this important topic.

I'll now leave the group for the same reasons than Daws. I think it doesn't stand by his virtuous name, and is unfortunately no different from all the other groups...

With my leaving, I think FT won't need to dissolve the group, so you can play on as if nothing had happened Smile

petitbonom

We sorted out the cheater, resigned the game , and thats it. Im not falling on my sword any more here, if you know of better holes , er sorry groups to go to , guaranteed cheat free, let me know.

petitbonom

Have all the members discussed this, still 14 I see.

I do not see the problem here.      Surprised

Super Admin just resigns those VC-Games, which he thinks were contaminated by asking team players to quit those VC-Games. If someone is reluctant to obey, then he uses the Admin Tool of Group Ban & Unban.

So, NO PROBLEMO, at all.

Then making new games instead & sharpening Group's Recruiting Criteria.

The Group Closure looks to be the Most Merciful Option. Sorry.     Frown
