Can You Outsmart Legends?

This brilliant puzzle was given to top players at a 1987 tournament featuring legends like Kasparov, Karpov, and Tal. Only Mikhail Tal found the solution. Kasparov and Karpov weren't able to find the solution. Even Stockfish of chess.com can't find the solution.
Think you can crack it?

Comment #4 - I solved the chess puzzle on my first try without any hints or solutions!!

No man.
when you said I am strong on open but watch the pawn I became 100% sure this is a rook because Rooks belong behind the passers.
I guessed rook on f1 because you said it's closer to the king so I gessued it might be short castled and rook is initally on f1.

Great thinking! You’re absolutely right that rooks often belong behind the passers, and your reasoning about the rook being on f1 because it’s closer to the king is spot on. So, you were correct in your guess! Nice work, and I appreciate your effort in analyzing it!You're somewhat correct! I like how you analyzed the position, and you were on the right track. Keep it up and you're getting closer!

You are a Rook on f1 waiting for waiting for your pawn on f2 to ‘move on!’ so you can slide down the f-file

BongCloudMDR

The d file. They are asking where.
