Here's my hotbar setup, with ratings about how much I prefer it:

1 - Sword (I won't budge on this): Since I play bedrock edition, the sword is the most basic and most applicable weapon. In Java edition, it could be an axe, since it can also be a weapon, but I think a sword is better for both versions, because if you get ambushed by mobs, a low-cooldown (for java edition), high damage weapon is right at slot #1, so you just have to hit 1 on your keyboard to get to it. Plus, if you're panicking bc you're about to die and the sword is in another slot, chances are you're actually going to have to find the number, and you might die in that time.

2 - Pickaxe (I can see myself putting this somewhere else, but I might have to get used to it): Idk it just feels normal to have my pickaxe there idk but for some reason @GeniusJacob has his pickaxe in the FIRST HOTBAR SLOT??? What if u hit 1 and you attacked a mob with your pickaxe?

3 - Axe (Remember, this is bedrock edition, so I've considered moving my axe out of my hotbar but I haven't bc I realized it's really useful and I used it a lot): I use my axe too much to keep it out of my hotbar, between breaking crafting tables, sometimes boats (bedrock edition), breaking shields (I don't play multiplayer PvP that much but I break shields a lot when I do), and using it as a weapon if my sword suddenly breaks . . . I actually didn't consider how useful axes are until now

4 - Ranged weapon (I honestly wouldn't have a problem with putting it somewhere else, but it's fine as it is so yeah): Usually a bow, sometimes a crossbow in the early game If I've found a Pillager Outpost, but in @GeniusJacob's best world (Which is like the only good world that is actually fun unlike my good worlds) I have this O.P. trident with impaling 3, Loyalty 3, unbreaking 3, and mending

5 - Food (I always put my food right after my tools and never will I ever change that . . . I think): Yeah thats it

After 4, I don't really care where everything is, as long as it's there, so here it is:

MLG clutch thingy: Usually a water bucket, and I usually have it in slot 5

Blocks: Probably cobblestone, just if I ever need to tower or bridge to escape something if I'm at low health

basically the rest are miscellaneous and whatever I need there at that time (could be torches, a boat, a crafting table, ender pearls, firework rockets, that kind of thing)
