Yes. That story was probably a myth or, according to some sources, was spoken by an earlier queen of France, but not Marie Antoinette, the one killed in the French Revolution. And no, the guillotine was of course not made up. The major problem with common beliefs about the revolution, though, is that they come from Thermidorian propaganda. The Thermidorians were in large part responsible for the reign of terror that occurred but in trying to escape the blame they made up stories saying people like Robespierre were behind it. Just the other day I found an article saying Robespierre was the most evil dictator who ever lived. That is just garbage.
