What are you using? A phone, mobile app, desktop, computer...? It could be a glitch from using chess.com on a device that isn't set up for it.

This seems to be another case where there is no initial text area, only the menu line. Just resize via the triangle in the lower right corner.
It is previously been suggested to chess.com to change the default message window size to always include at least room for 1 text line to avoid this confusing circumstance.

Working on this; I am trying to make it such that we always remember what your typically use and leave it there. But I don't know when we'll be able to do it.

Remembering a user's previous setting would be great and an improvement which would take some coding, more than just setting the default size. Changing the default size of the message area to always be at least big enough for one test line is much less code and avoids the subtle need for resize.
Maybe a 2 phase approach. Fix the default first, then add the logic to remember the user's prior setting.
