What is your Personal Best in the 5km and how to improve?
About a week ago I did a 5km run to see where I was at with my fitness. I ran it in 18:23 and would consider that my best in the distance. My suggestion for sub-20 is really valuing long runs, as they make the 5km distance seem a lot easier than it is. Then you will need to do "speed work", perhaps 1km repeats faster than 4:00/km with a short rest in between.
well I did a lot of 5k's and for training we usually do half miles or four hundreds we can't do anything harder because there are slower and younger people in the group
I think the biggest difference for younger people training is they shouldn't run high-mileage or for too long of a distance, but that's just my opinion.
Hi all! Just started running here
Still in the walk/run stage to get into it... I see yesterday I went 4.80km and it took 30m 25s. That is partly walking, so it's very slow of course.
Want to look back at this post in a while and hopefully there will be a big improvement!
Do you folks have PB's for other distances as well?
Any 10k' ers out there? Half marathon? Marathon?
Hi @jay_1944. It's great to hear you've started running. I look forward to hearing about your progress; your next step should probably be 5km under 30m.
I've done some marathons and halfs but I'm not thrilled about my times. My 10k best is 37:45 and I'd like to attempt under 37 one of these days.
Thanks for support! I've been put on hold for now. As a new runner, it's tough enough on its own.. but now I went back to work. On feet all day, walk miles, kneel, crawl, climb stairs, ladders etc... What do you think about a new runner, still running, if they are hard on legs all day?
I'm a little off topic lol. If there's a better place for this question, by all means.
@jay_1944 There's nothing wrong with having tired legs and running at the end of the day. You will adapt. However, I wouldn't continue if it leads to constant fatigue or dramatic weight loss. Just my thoughts.
New here.
My time on 5km was 19:50 but it was previous to the none physical activities bann because it was prohibited for 73 days in my city due to covid_19 protocols. Its very hard to get back at peak form and besides their are no physical marathons or race events. So the best in my view its make a good base of strong work outs for severral months combining with 40 - 50 kms runs total in a week. Eventually it will do the trick and its good way not to push so soon your current limits because it might cause you a physical disconfort or even an injury.
Ohh and my name is Jorge witch in english is George. ![]()
Good advice @ExpoRunner and good time!
To get started I have only been doing 30 mins at a time... 5 walking, 20 running as much as comfortable, then 5 walking.
Today I tried first ever 5km without any walking and managed to finish
It took 26:25! Gives some perspective on how fast you 19m or even 18m folks must run!
