Yeah I know, saw Dubious Skills play that version. Wasnt a fan of that version in particular, but 8th rank promotion would make lines taken quite interesting

FFA all the way

I'll tell you why teams is better. There's a lot more skill involved rather than luck. In FFA, you're reliant on the other players not teaming up on you. In teams, it's completely fair.

So cool.

Thx u for telling me your opinion.

Right now there are 54 active games. 5 Teams, 49 FFA. This shows their relative popularity.

I prefer Teams as well. In the FFA variant you are partly dependent on your opponents, whereas in the Teams variant you are not.

With one opponent (either a team or a single player) it's all about finding the best move, assuming best play by your opponent. If your opponent plays inferior moves, that will just make your life easier.

In FFA, however, there is no optimal move. It's more about finding satisfactory moves that don't put you at a disadvantage compared to either opponent and meanwhile trying to profit from attacks and threats made by others. Whether you win or lose is not entirely in your own hands. As @tommerrall949 said, there is an element of chance.

What I find most interesting about the Teams variant is that it is possible to develop theory just like in regular chess. I would very much like to see what would happen if you let a computer play it. In regular chess, white is considered to have a slight first-move advantage. In four-player chess, is there a similar first-move advantage for red and yellow or is it much bigger? Is it possible to solve four-player team chess? Food for thought. happy.png

In my opinion FFA is an adapted variant of chess to 4 player and Teams game is a complete different game that shuld not  be called chess.

In FFA players earn points for capturing pieces, checkmates, etc. There are no points in classic chess. So, "that should not be called chess" can be applied to FFA too happy.png , if we use this logic.
