Interesting, I think this might be a good idea yeah, some indication of which direction, because those small cognitive loads do add up in 4-player. I don't think I've ever misjudged a pawn, but I'm sure it does weigh on your brain. Question is, does that make the game more or less fun?

I made this layout suggestion a while back (it was before the player names and such were next to the board):
imo, it does not look that well with turned pieces, but players having an option to view this way might be interesting.

I agree with OP that it would have to be just pawns or you just increase cognitive load that much more

I can see how this layout could be very useful if we ever do a "vampire" variant. Where when you capture/checkmate a king, those pieces and that turn become yours to control.
