I was tauhgt to play chess by my mum during rainy summer holidays when I was young and instantly loved the game. But because I didn't really have anyone to play against I only played rarely until I joined chess.com in 2010. I have now found a local chess club and am a total addict.
Who taught you how to play chess

I basiclly was self-taught. Well I saw someone playing chess when I was 12 & fell love with it. But only 1 year later did I learnt it by watching my friends play by way of observing Of course the reason I did not ask anyone's help was ego. I told them that I knew when in actual fact i did not. I had a friend H-- --- --E who help me improve & later Adly became my playing partner. After marriage I stopped playing chess until late 2008 where I just played once a while. Became active again in early 2009. Now I have improved a lot because of this site.

I played chess since I was a kid.Learned from reading books, played with friends.Since joined chess.com improved a lot but not a good player.Always make silly mistakes.Any way thanks.

My father taught me beginning when I was 13. After a year or so he couldn't beat me and didn't want to play anymore. Not that I was very good, he was a poor player and didn't want to make the effort to improve much in the game.

My father taught me when I eas about 8. I remeber watching him and my uncle playing when Iwas about 6 and basicly begged for 2 years to be taught the game. My father thought I was too young to play so I had to wait. He was a strong intermediated player who really drilled the opening pricipals into me. We played so many d4-d5 closed games until I found the Queens Gambit. I play now mostly at the Toowoomba chess club and on ICC.

I was taught to play by my father when I was about 5 years old. I liked to play and grasped some basic strategies early. I have a brother which is 3 years older than me and I played against him often during our childhood. He beat me consisently but we both still enjoyed playing. I started to beat him more and more once I was about 11 years old. I still enjoy the game but only play occaisionally with friends. However, since I found www.chess.com I make chess moves every day and I love it!

When I started chess was rather late, it was when I was 21, i.e. 3 years ago.
Actually why I started chess was I wanted a hobby which motivated me to study English.
In my country chess is never popular, thus I have to read chess books written in English.
At that time I was already 21, it means I had enough money.
I ordered many chess books and read them via Amazon.com,,, hehehe.
Now, chess itself is one of my favorite hobbies. Yes I love chess.
At the same time my English skill has made some progress. That's perfect!
(of course, I know my English is still awkward enough, but my English was much worse! XD,,,)

Hi Jag, I guess you are talking about shogi and
yes, it is a kind of Japanese chess.
The biggest difference is that when I capture an opponent's piece,
the piece becomes mine!,,, it means I can put the piece on a vacant square.
Therefore, shogi is
-more tactical
-less theoretical
than chess, I think :)

Tell us, who taught you how to play chess. Did it really help and you had your grip over the game at that starting phase, Or you worked harder later with someone else to improve your game. Thank you very much for your response.
I learnt chess from my sister when I was about 6 yrs old. We used to play so many games during my summer vacations in those long hot sunny afternoons. My sister used to play with a piece down in the begining to give me an advantage, though I never liked that. by the age of 15, I gave her no chance to win against me even in any fair game match (all pieces) (now if we happen to play, I hv to play 1 piece down, just to pay back those pieces of my childhood). But that taught me just basics, as my sister played chess for fun only .
After a pause of few years, during my college days in Mumbai,I found few good players. Regular thrashing by them helped me a lot. I learned a bit about openings, tactics, strategies by casual reading from a book and eventually became invincible in my college by my last year.
I stopped playing for many years and joined chess.com in 2010 to find that there is no end to learning here. My game improved drastically and now I am incurably addicted to chess.
Now it's your turn >>
