Would you rather? Variants edition

1. Large community of custom variants, or this size but really tight knitted comminuty

2. More fairy pieces or More gamerules (like a lot)

3. Every NCV you submit gets accepted (only can submit every 3 months) or cmoing up with really good ideas every week

A friendly community is all we need

I mean, true, but like where will you get the new fairy pieces and gamerules from?

One word: Hypothetical

we have fairy piece and game rule ideas aplenty, they just aren't implemented. If you disagree, search all the "OmG I HaVe A GrEaT FaIrY PiEcE IdEa ItS ToTaLy OrIgOnAl" posts rotting in the dungeon.

I would pick the fairy chess pieces and gamerules, nothing can replace that in my opinion, the community will already grow over time, slowly but surely, if every NCV got accepted them the entire server would be full of trash variants

Short story: NO! NO! NO! PLEASE NO!! NO!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Long story: Too many gamerules and pieces leads too an overflow of beginner-unfriendly variants, which would shrink the community a ton.

after a bit of thinking the gamerules/pieces is enough to make thousands of masterpieces

especially considering this community is so small there could be a lot of ideas unexplored

Thought I'd give some insight as a CGA:

1. If I had to choose, probably large community, since that means more exposure and popularity for Custom Variants as a whole and is inevitably a good thing. The thing I would be concerned about the specifics on is how it'll be harder to moderate the club; if any of you are in the Chess.com Community club, it's got a ton of members, sure, but most of the forum topics are utter nonsense and it's developed a culture where spamming is normalized. A tight-knit community might be better for discussion; but in the end, it's really about the process of how a club gets to a large membership.

2. More gamerules. Most barriers to adding variants to chess.com are generally because of lack of gamerules, whereas fairy pieces are essentially easier to make up for without sacrificing the spirit of the game. I can understand that there are a ton of posts asking for fairy pieces, but think of variants like Alice Chess!

3. This seems like a more self-centered question, but I would still go with really good ideas every week, since that could really increase the standard for accepting variants. Keep in mind that the standard shifts with the times, and isn't stagnant.

not exactly, if you aren’t good at a variant then just don’t play it, even if new fairy chess pieces and Gamerules got added beginner friendly variants would still exist, and with more fairy chess pieces more variants would be possible, which would make the community a lot larger (larger community = more good ideas), In my opinion new fairy chess pieces would be straight up the best thing, also because we had (and we still have) to work with the same damn pieces for several years, as far as I know the last update the variant server got was the update that changed spell chess icon and added checky chess
